Sitting through the auction today which should answer the gillingham debate. All of the pre war Swindon went for £100 + and commission on top. Whoever got the gillingham bound volumes at approx £45 a programme got a bargain!
Some highlights from today's auction excluding commission
Arsenal 1934 charity shield £520
Arsenal v spurs 1941 London cup £420
Brighton Chelsea 1939 £260
Chelsea man utd 1939 £500
Exeter v Leeds 1931 £900!!!

Seems like someone left a blanket £75 commission on all of the Swindon 1st team progs leaving room, internet and phone bidders to step in at £80 and upwards.

The really special items were fetching very good prices - interesting to note Lockdales managed to get £440 plus commission for the Arsenal v Grimsby 1936 FA Cup Semi Final whereas Graham Budd was unable to shift both of his with bidding petering out around £250 on each.

The Leeds items were going to a phone bidder (I wonder who Wink ).

Some glorious obscure fixtures going at reasonable prices - I managed to get a couple of the pre-war Park Royals and ...... erm ..... four of the Swindon pre-wars Smile

The Arsenal Charity shield fetched £380 plus commission not £520. As for the price of the Gillinghams v Swindons, the Swindon programmes were mainly very clean, the Gillingham ones all had punch holes, many people dont like punch holes, so in my opinion the Swindon ones were cheap, i bought 2 29/30s for £110 and £80, very happy.

You are quite right posh, it was an interesting auction, my bottle went a couple of times on a few items, it is so hard judging the programme collecting market at the moment. You think you have it sussed and then there are some nice surprises Shocked and the inevitable disasters Mad

With risk of sounding like a complete nerd I really enjoyed the auction..... I went in for the Leeds items, the 44-45 home v Sheff Utd almost sold at £32..... Then I bottled out at £95, didn't help the misses was listening to it at the time.

The exter v Leeds was always going to go big, I was prepared to go to £400, but think it opened at £480(??)

What did York v Leeds 33/34 go for?

I did get the 1945 cup final for £28 but it's been repaired, worth a punt I guess.

Certainly got me in the mood for the London fair....

the york v leeds testimonial was £300 . Kenny

I found their estimates amusing , it shows thats some of these auction houses are totally inept when it comes to valuing items. Not really the best day to have an auction, when all the Chelsea collectors are in Germany.

The leeds items never fail to surprise!

I am sending a bound volume away for dismantling and it contains the Cardiff vs leeds 1920-21 issue which is first league season for both clubs.

Wonder what that might fetch at auction?

Cheers,
John

1941 England v Wales ''Pirate'' souvenir programme sold for £750 before the fees, was there something special about that programme? Had King Arthur signed it? I got mine on ebay for £22

The match at Nottingham Forest ?

For it to go that high you needed at least two people to think it was an official programme.

Very strange. Confused

I never bid at these auctions, I can never afford it for a start.

It seems a constant thing that public themed auction seem to get 20% higher prices. I find that very strange as the buyer often pays a lot more and the seller often receives a lot less.

So bad deal for both sides of the market, can only be those paying most times don't use the internet or don't bother to do much research.

Final point - no wonder people trying to sell to me want more then I could hope to pass on for Smile

Dont think it was the pirate, the programme for the game at forest has a wrap around cover, the prograame looked like the official one to me,the last one fetched 1300 at sportingold, this was the same as the one which sold at sportingold.

I think , if people have made a day of it, they don't want to walk away with nothing. Of course a clever dealer/buyer would set a limit and walk away if it was reached. But normal human nature is not like that, and at auctions common sense goes out of the window, a win a all cost mentality sets in. It becomes personal, which is crazy.

I know all about that, when I set-out to do this full time about 15 years ago I took £2,000 to an auction and came back with about £1,000 worth of memorabilia Smile in fact I still have the Leeds euro cup final ticket 75? I paid about £175 for that all in, whats it worth now ? maybe £30.

I would like to think I've picked up a bit since then Smile

just to confirm the england wales 191 at notts f was the official issue for the game this programme has fetched up to £3000 in the past so it was a good buy on the day. spent to much myself on wartime programmes but a very good auction.i have to say lockdales let themselves down when it came to dating programmes and descriptions ect loads of errors.
