Because this forum has pretty much died over the last few years, what with the dying of collectors, dealers and the hobby add to that the sign-in issues we have experienced.
I'm a member of several programme groups on facebook and twitter and they are pretty active compared to this once active forum _________________ www.programmehut.com - The Internet Dealers

oh i am more than aware of how this site has deteriorated over the last few years. I run my own MU FB site and am involved in a 100 others world wide.
This site has no direction and has not had for a long time and this is why i just now and then look to see if there is anything of interest, i have to say i do not know why, but some old habits die hard.
The Hobby is absolutely buoyant as regards Auctions despite the added on charges of around anything from 25-35% which has priced a lot of people away including some mature collectors who feel that it is too high an add on, but it seems to make little difference, but i have noticed that in all of the auctions not everything has been selling, no doubt there will be others who will perhaps tell me the opposite.
I think it has become an elitist hobby now with those with a few bob keen to continue indulging but there is so little encouragement for the younger collector.
Ebay changed the World for the better ages ago but nowadays do you rarely see anything of a serious note other than over priced tat.
The Long term future for new people has been bleak for years and collecting modern day items that as soon as they are purchased lose 90% of the value that has just been paid, after all who wants any Premier League home programmes and all these fake shirts and fake signatures and other such BS items. _________________ To see 20,00++ original items relating to Newton Heath & Manchester Utd 1878-2023 then visit www.flickr.com/photos/manchesterunitedman1/sets to see entire uploads.

There's a bunch of issues here. The hobby is evolving and aging and slowing. There's a move away from programmes to jerseys and signed tat but tickets seem to be holding up well and select programmes still seem to hold interest.
There are other websites/media (like Leslie I'm in a bunch of Facebook groups and there's plenty of activity there), I see bit on Twitter, I'm not on Instagram.
A big problem though is this site deteriorated significantly over the years. Like lots of members I'm on a second or third new account because we all get getting locked out. We used to be able to embad pictures in a post, now that seems to be impossible. Dorking's enjoyable match badges thread should be a series of pictures, instead its a series of links you have to individually right click and open in a new window, then go to the new window. And you have to know how to do that! Leslie's amazing collection is only visible by clicking through to Flickr. It's not a massive imposition but no longer being able to embed pictures and the lack of functionality here is a big factor in the massive decline. |

My collection can be seen at
www.10footballs.com
I`ve got 100 or so to add next month as I`ve slowed down the collecting in recent years, and dont bother much with the modern stuff but its still a hobby I love.
Hers hoping it continues

I enjoy finding examples of match badges each season and putting the pics onto this site site on the thread for it.
The programmes I collect are 99% the current ones for games I go to, I am not really into paying £100+ for stuff a century (or more) old. I have most of the examples of that sort of stuff that I want to be honest. There are some 1920's and older seasons of Palace homes that I would like to have but I cannot justify the cost really.
My main collecting is (current) Palace match badges, current Palace programmes, Dorking programmes for the games I go to, and 60's/ 70's random souvenir stuff off ebay if I like the look of it (mugs, blazer badges, pennants that sort of old stuff). I also get physical tickets at every game I go to because I can't cope with the stress of smartphone ticketing, so I enjoy keeping those and it becoming a collection.
I also like books about collecting and collections.
For me I don't really care if what I buy is modern and worthless to others as soon as I have bought it. I like to collect things that I visually enjoy acquiring, that I like looking at and preserving. The resale value doesn't matter to me.
I do have many 100+ year old postcards and cigarette cards, and I was pleased to lend them to an author who is writing a series of history books, but I don't often find new additions like them. Equally it's a very rare occasion when I can buy a medal that I want. I like that I am constantly collecting small and affordable things, rather than a few times a year buying valuable but expensive antiquities.
People might want to see what I have in my collection room, but this site isn't great for displaying pictures, and there are better facebook pages out there for niche collection interests. I particularly enjoy the badge groups.
One of the really handy things about this site is the sharing info about which clubs do printed programmes, and which are digital etc - at a time when it's a real transition it is very helpful to get tips on that. |

First off, for me, I have very little social media prescence. I was kicked off Facebook a little while ago and chose not to have to video my face to get back on. I am not on X or Instagram either. For me, it is just collecting and uploading to my web site - qpr-prog.co.uk
However, as I see it, there are two main (though probably more) types of collectors. Those who collect to show and those who collect to not. Leslie, as with a some of others here, are in the first grouping. We like to display our collections to the world without cost for others to appreciate. We get pleasure doing that. Many others, and that is no doubt the majority of collectors, do not and thus forums like this may have a large number of members, but only a few will post and only a few will want to show off their collections.
All that said, a recent survey has shown that the general population of football followers is getting older, and much too fast. That means also that there are less and less new young collectors whom we must say have plenty of other distractions now than we had decades ago.
Finally, and I think it is more relevant to Leslie's collection, is that there appears a new set of collectors/investors appearing, those that are from East and South-East Asia and they have big pockets. We have seen Manchester United programmes recently going for ridiculous prices when compared to barely a year or so ago. Perhaps this is the new direction that collecting will head... to East/South East Asia. |

As seen from the number of posts made vs. years I've been a member I certainly have not been active on here but have found this site to be an invaluable resource at times. I've been collecting since my mid teens (almost 30 years now) and feel I have a handle on what I like to collect and have the knowledge which allows me to do that. However there are blind spots with regards to certain programmes within my collecting sphere where I struggle to get more information or even a ballpark value (not so I can sell, I buy to keep, but to give a steer if something happens in the future and loved ones need to 'dispose'). I use this site and the Centrespot one mainly (as well as some FB groups) to try and gather that knowledge to but in the case of the latter, seeing that something is ranked 'very hard' on the CP site doesn't really help. I wish (like my other collecting passion of older Lego) there were sites that you could go to and find out more and understand why there may be such a price differential between a dealers catalogue price and recent eBay sold listings, for example, or to learn there was a limited print run and that's why this is x amount. |
