I couldn't resist one of the "Brighton bits" our friend pafcprogs was offering a week or two ago. So I bought a photo hoping I could identify the opponents and the fixture. This one is plain backed, 8x6" and I reckon it's Peter Ward with curly top and if so it's 1975/6 or later as he signed for Albion in May 75.

I would suggest the oppo are in all red. And I also guess it's the keeper in that unrefined pose to the left. Any defender in that position is asking for trouble!

So my questions are - is it the Goldstone Ground?

Who are the opponents? See the 4 pics below for some visual clues.

And can we date it?

All help gratefully received as always.

Top one looks like Dennis Martin (WBA/Carlisle/Newcastle) but they never played Brighton while Ward was there (1975-80).

Thank you in anticipation.

Yes that was the Goldstone Ground.

Ah Steve Kindon, not the shrinking violet type. He was once asked which player he disliked playing against the most?

Answer Tommy Smith. Said he was different to the rest. Players like Hunter would be talking to you all the time, telling you that you were going to get it and when, usually after about 30 seconds.

Smith never said a word, there was never ever any dialogue. The silent assassin. You'd knew you were going to get it, but you didn't know when. Said he made him very nervous for the whole 90 minutes Laughing

Just googled Steve and came up with the follow comment from him on Tommy Smith: "I'm not saying Tommy Smith was hard," he says, "but he was born on 5 April 1945 and a month later, Germany surrendered."

By the way Pete. It could have been in his Hudderfieled days hence they would be playing in a change kit?

Just checked on the Historic Football Kits website and Brighton wore white socks from 1975 through to 1980 when they moved to an all blue kit. Looks more like the April 1974 kit.

Could be Steve Kindon

Burnley 1968-72
Wolves 1972-78
Burnley 1978-80
Huddersfield 1980-82

Peter Ward Brighton 1975-6 to 80/1, Forest 80/1 to 82/3 and then briefly Albion on loan again before heading West to Seattle.

This is 70's kit all round, no sponsors, curly hair-cuts etc - suggests if it's Kindon it's Wolves 75-8 or maybe Burnley 78-80.

Thanks again guys!

Looks like a generic "change" strip to me - suggesting the opposition is someone whose usual kit would clash with Brighton's.

I get the feeling that's an all-red kit rather than all-blue.

'Keeper looks a wee bit like Charlton's Charlie Wright....

Yes, agree it could be a change strip and it's more likely to be all red than anything else. So maybe a team usually in blue, or in stripes of some kind, changing to all red.

I can confirm it's not Burnley or Wolves so that rules out Steve Kindon in the background.

Thanks again all but I'm nowhere near solving it really.

Absolutely no help to you, Pete, but my instinct when I first saw the photo was it's Brighton v Shrewsbury.

If Shrewsbury it could be March 1976 when Ward was at Brighton. I have a Shrews contact I could ask. Thanks for that.

If Bolton in 1972, would they have worn all-red away kit to Brighton? I can see they did often wear a red away shirt back then from photos on my site. But that's before Ward joined Brighton. Does look a bit like Charlie Wright though and here's John Ritson in 1975

Cheers again.

I reckon Charlie Wright and John Ritson too - If you Google Wright you'll see a picture of him in red shorts and socks suggesting the all red away kit, wondered if the Bolton player in the background could be John Byrom?

The Brighton player could be Peter O'Sullivan.

just going to throw this one out.

Given the Brighton kit looks like 1973-4 (the only season that matches with the kit),...... could it be the FA cup replay against Walton and Hersham where Brighton famously lost 4-0.

Walton and Hersham wore all red and the Steve Kindon look-a-like does resemble Walton's Dave Morris

Don't think so as the replay at Brighton was a night game in November Sherlock

When Bolton played at Derby in the Cup in 76/77, their away strip was red shirts and white shorts.

There's a clip on YouTube of 73/4 Brighton v Walton & Hersham, Pete - maybe check that out and compare with the photo? Looks promising!
