Hello everyone, I am the new boy on here and I am looking for advice about selling a number of programmes that belong to an old man of 90+ who is going into a nursing home. There are 2 problems that I can see as regards the condition that they are in. (1) Generally they are in good condition but unfortunately he used to hold sets together with string and so they all have a punched hole in the top left corner. (2) On most of them he has written the names of the players who took part over the names printed in the programme.
In general what sort of % below a good condition programme without these faults should I expect to get?

Hello mate
First questions would be what clubs/games are they, what seasons and how many programmes are there? If you can give a bit more information then people will be able to impart their advice more accurately.
All the best
Mark

We need to know, what clubs and what years before anyone can give you a decent estimate

Hi Lads, Thanks for the welcome. To be honest I have only had them a couple of days and there is a bit of a mixture. I would say that the majority are Palace Home games starting in the 1950's to the early 70's. However, there are some earlier single sheet Spurs and Chelsea from the 1940's. There are a number of 1950's non league mainly Croydon a few Cup Finals 1961 and 1964, the England 9 Scotland 3 game and others I have yet to look through.

My main concern was how much the mentioned defects would affect the price of any programme.

I think most collectors would do a devalue of 50% or even more with punched holes and teams changes, however if one is a rare programme that may mitigate the defect .......... All depends on who is the home team and the away team and of course the year
ie, a 1990 to date with the defects you described value nil

Dave, I have all Palace home programmes in my collection back to about 1950, and if they had a hole in the top corner I would either avoid buying it or only collect it if it was truly scarce. Team changes wouldn't bother me as presumably they are inside out of sight. To be honest, there aren't many rare Palace programmes in that period. Some of the early 50's ones (particularly 53/4) are on very poor paper so are a bit rarer than some of the surrounding seasons. But with a hole in the corner you would reduce the value by 50% give or take.

Croydon Amateurs in the 50's are fairly scarce - I know a serious collector & historian if you'd like to be put in touch.

Hi Dave
Excellent advice to date although I am afraid that I would say punch holes an devalue a programme sometimes by as much as 80-90% to practically worthless
However some issues may be scarce such as the non league and spurs you have mentioned.
I would be inclined to give a brief breakdown and then we can advise which ones may be worth looking at.
For example the Palace programmes post 1955 I wouldn't even bother worrying about but the Croydon or Chelsea Spurs early issues may be worth researching
Hope this helps

Thanks very much everyone for the good advice. I did think that a hole in the corner would be a big issue. I have a lot of sorting and research to do before deciding how to sell. Does anyone know if ebay is a good place to try and get the best price or would auctions be better for the older ones?

Pete I will get back to you about the Croydon ones when I have got more details thanks.

Hi Pete, It's a pity you do not like the holes. I have found quite a few Palace Home and some away from the mid to late 1940's. Even some single sheets for reserve games. I suppose it's because it was just after the war but some progs are single sheets and the next week it is 8 pages!

Dave

If you live in Croydon or surrounds I'd love to see these as the single sheet reserve issues are probably worth more than all the 50's 1st team stuff. I don't collect reserve programmes but I know a bloke who does and he's local too - he'd pay you a fair price without your having to resort to EBay.

Let me know about the Croydon Amateurs ones too.

Cheers

Hi Pete, I live in Bexleyheath but I work near J8 on M25 opposite side to Reigate, so not a million miles away. It is taking a long time sorting through what could be a thousand programmes. Just found 1948 F A Cup Semi Blackpool v Spurs which is of great interest to me as a Spurs fan. I reckon you might have guessed I was Palace but they are my second team as my dad started taking me in the late sixties. Been to loads of Palace games down the years, best was Villa Park Cup Semi Final v Liverpool, I was stood on the base of a floodlight in the Holt End. I still get to one or two Palace games as I have a few mates with season tickets and they let me go if one of them cannot make it. I am sure that you are genuine so as soon as I have sorted them all out I will let you know about Croydon and Palace Reserves. I see what you mean about 1953/54, I have quite a few from that season both types.

I have less than half a dozen with punch holes in a collection of 4,000 and they are early ones which I hope to replace. Punch holes are a terrible flaw which no collector likes, I would only buy a rarish one for cheap as a filler.

Dave
I'm about 30 mins from J8 and could meet you there or you are welcome here on your way home from work - or I could drive to Bexleyheath - but there's no rush.
Maybe PM me here or email me if you have any specific details.
Cheers!

Hi Pete can you tell me anything about Selhurst Park F C.I have a programme from 1961 away to Croydon but there is nothing about them on the web apart from the Final League Table for that season?

That game was played on 02 December 1961 in the Surrey Senior League. I found the final table for that season and Selhurst finished about 4th from the bottom but that was the only season they appear.

That's the sort of programme the Croydon collector I know is sure to be after. Presumably it was the Croydon reserve team as they were in the Athenian League then I think.

I'll email this bloke now, see what he says.

Dave, he has that programme!!! He says to ask if you have the return fixture at Selhurst Park FC.

And he's very interested in the 50's stuff.
