Yep, Motty was one of us, a proper football anorak, God rest his soul.

Lovely man too, by all accounts.
That's two broadcasting legends we've lost in a week after Dickie Davies.

RIP fellas x

As a schoolboy in St Albans I had the good fortune to interview local resident John Motson for my school magazine in the mid 80s. As a wannabe sports reporter he could not have been more helpful as we chatted in his study.
On discovering I was a programme collector he spent over an hour showing me his collection which was fantastic, England homes, old cup finals etc.
An absolute aladdin's cave to my young eyes. I remember he was particularly proud of the England v Holland programme from 1946 and explained it was so rare because it had poured with rain at the game and most of them would have turned to mush.
It took me 30 years to finally acquire a copy. I noticed that he sold it and many others with Graham Budd (I think) a year or so ago.
He also offered to be a reference for my application to a journalism course. I remember the disbelieving looks on the faces of the interview panel and they said they would be checking with him.
I can only assume he said something nice because I got in and it started a career that took me through local papers, local radio and national titles.
When we occasionally met in later years (normally at the bar at some sports journalism bash) he seemed genuinely delighted to have been of help.
In the past week many colleagues have told me similar stories. No one has a bad word to say about him. So RIP Motty, the voice of the game and true football fan. Cheers and thanks.[/b]
