Post subject: A Selhurst Park Mystery? |
|
|
Now here is an interesting teaser.
It is I believe a couple of postcards of Selhurst Park 1908-9.
The player to the right of the football (seated) is Henry Bromley (b.19.2.1886)
My obvious query is......has this got anything to do with Crystal Palace?
Knowing that there are a number of knowledgeable of Palace fans on the Forum. I thought they may be able to help?
I think not.....but over to you!
Ian

There is no connection with Crystal Palace FC what so ever
this has been raised by another collector not on this site I may add who asked privately if there was any connection.
A non league fanatic I know had no information on the club and is not on any historical database he knows of.
Stand to be corrected on any of the above info |

The site of "Selhurst Park" was a brickworks in 1908-9.
CPFC were formed in 1905 and various fore-runners started up in the 1890's but never took off. Palace played at the original Palace, Herne Hill cycle arena and then The Nest (Selhurst) before moving into Selhurst Park in August 1924.
Croydon Common were a Southern League side through the 1900's and never played against a team called Selhurst Park at any level, as far as my records go. They played at The Nest before they went bust in 1917 and Palace took over the ground.
It is indeed a mystery, but I agree totally with Nutfield. |

Dear Nutfield Priory & PPP,
Thanks for your respective inputs.
It sounds like an obscure parks team that have now drifted off into obscurity.
Best regards, Ian |

Rocky, apart from the fact that is utterly brilliant that you found that, please can I ask what year is that table from please.
I ask because my 9 year old son goes to St Pauls (CofE) Primary School in Dorking and even plays for them. The school is over 150 years old by the way!
By the way I had also never heard of a team called Selhurst Park!! |

Hi Dorking, although from a different era to the Selhurst Park mentioned in previous posts, I also found another Selhurst Park but I believe that they only played for one season in the Surrey Senior League as shown in the final table below. I couldn't find anything else about them
Surrey Senior League 1961-1962
1. Chertsey Town 30 22 4 4 98 46 48
2. Camberley 30 20 4 6 79 53 44
3. Hampton 30 18 6 6 68 39 42
4. Addlestone 30 17 7 6 83 43 41
5. Chobham 30 17 6 7 73 35 40
6. Croydon Amateurs 30 18 4 8 79 45 40
7. Vickers 30 14 6 10 70 55 34
8. Farncombe 30 14 5 11 69 53 33
9. Malden Town 30 11 7 12 76 70 29
10. Frimley Green 30 10 2 18 57 79 22
11. Farnham Town 30 10 2 18 61 96 22
12. Selhurst Park 30 9 4 17 61 99 22
13. Worcester Park 30 7 5 18 50 73 19
14. Whyteleafe 30 7 4 19 43 72 18
15. Banstead Athletic 30 4 7 19 40 80 15
16. Cobham 30 4 3 23 27 96 11 |

It's marvellous what can be found on fish 'n chip paper up North fella.
But in all honesty, a subscription to the British Newspaper Archives helps. A bit like google, put something into their search engine and up pops a multitude of information from all decades. Then a quick trawl through the relevant era can bring up the answers you are looking for, in this case Selhurst Park.
It's great for footy research from the 1880's through to the early 60's in particular and I'm always happy to help out you 'Southern Softies'.
