Spotted this on the internet, don't know how true it was?

My Dad always moaned about going to Ajax in 1966 and not being able to see any of our game - just as well really as we were beaten 5-1. Sad

MY first experience of fog at a match was in December 1969 when the game at Anfield against Sheffield Wednesday was called off just as we got to the ground. Sad On another occasion in the Super Cup Final of 1978 you could barely see the halfway line from the Kop. Indeed, the Kopites were shouting "Annie Rd, what's the score?!" Laughing

So, what are your own personal football fog related memories?! Smile

Late 70s - Aberdeen v Keith at Pittodrie in the Aberdeenshire Cup.

No more than 150 people in the one section of the main stand that was open (no programme for the game).

Aberdeen were 4-0 up when the fog came in off the North Sea....Keith centre-half controlled a bouncing ball on the half-way line, looked up, and wellied it high into the fog.

And out of the fog the ball came, bouncing behind Jim Leighton and into the net.

Just a shame there were no cameras there to capture it as he could try that another 1,000 times and not hit it with such precision.

I wasn't there but Watford v Palace on 3rd Oct 1961 was played in fog - I have 2 photos firstly showing Johnny Byrne and Colin Meldrum appearing out of the gloom, and then a goalmouth scene with a shrouded Palace forward being foiled by the Hornet keeper Underwood. Palace lost this game 3-2.

I don't remember seeing a game at Selhurst like that although my memory is often foggy due to a few pints of Master Brew or Youngs Special beforehand.

Colchester Utd v Darlington in the late 1980s at Layer Road

Friday night game, dense fog, freezing cold, the referee agreed to kick off but only when the half dozen or so Darlington supporters in the Layer Road end were moved to the main stand so they could see the game

I stuck it out until half time but couldn't see anything, amazed the match was completed

Drove up to Sheffield United v Palace around 1987ish got to Sheffield and parked up went into local pub early and was advised to leave due to our London accents. Game ended 0-0 but couldnet see the other end of the pitch.
Another was driving to OXford v Wimbledon around 1983, left London in sunshine arrived in Oxford an hour later in freezing fog so ended up buying a seat near the halfway line and couldnt see either goal, also ended 0-0

About 1964-65 I went on the train to Liverpool to see Liverpool take on Chelsea n the FA cup .I walked from Lime Street station and he crowds separated, one part went towards Goodison Park where I believe Kings Lynn were the visitors and the other veered towards anfield. I stood on the Kop, what a wonderful experience. The score was from memory 5-1 o the home side but as I was about a third of the way up the Kop I could barely see out of the penalty area and the goals were in the main scored at the far end. On the few visits to Merseyside the fog spoiled other games, notably Everton spurs around 1963 , but lovely memories

England v Bulgaria U-21's at Filbert Street, stood behind the goal but could only see one end. It was in 1979 England won 5-0, the following night the full international was postponed at Wembley because of fog and moved 24 hours, one of the few England games ever postponed at Wembley.

Port Vale v Palace FA Cup replay mid 90s (1996?)

Was behind the goal in the away stand and honestly couldn't see the other end. Game went to extra time and we lost 4-3 I think. It was not only foggy but also a night game so dark into the bargain! The floodlights had no chance!

Have clear memory that Palace scored at the 'other' end and nobody in our end knew about it apart from a sort of 'groan' from the home fans, and then the Palace players ran back to the halfway line through the fog celebrating, the Port Vale kicked off, so we knew we'd scored!

Wolves v West Brom - local derby - early 1980's.
Stood on the old South Bank and could see only the goal in front of me, not even the centre circle in view. Wolves won the game 2-0 and we only knew of the goals at our end as the noise travelled along the side stands to ours.
Saw the goals later in the evening on Match of the Day. The fog sat about ten foot above the pitch and the only cameras the BBC used were those at ground level, the cameras on the top of the stands could see nothing.
