He'd never last at Argyle...we don't like 'em we knock 'em out
I refereed for a while in the Basildon and district Saturday league as a callow 22 year old newly qualified ref....first sending off before I completed the first half of my first game for a right hook off the ball, plus a forty something hulk screaming in my face when I gave a penalty against him....eek.
Even better...I didn't drive so they were the team responsible for giving me a lift home...
Second match was better....foul after thirty seconds...
Me to player: Do you know how much extra paper work I have to do if I send you off rather than book you?
Player: No ref
Me: Absolutely f****G none
he was good as gold after that...
Happy days... _________________ Currently disposing of my collection so please email any wants lists to [email protected].

The non-league is great for stuff like this.
Years ago when Newport were in the Beazer Homes League, a mate of mine at an away game behind the goal (Evesham I think) gave the home keeper so much stick, his Dad came around at half-time to sort him out.
It took about 3 or 4 blokes to drag this keeper's old man off him.
The same mate also got stuck in a turnstile at Dorchester a few years later!

It is, isn't it.
I still, to this day, feel bad about standing behind the goal laughing at the Penzance goalkeeper who conceded 13 against Falmouth Town.
He turned round to me and my mate and, quite visibly upset, said "do you think you could do any better?"
Two minutes after I replied "I couldn't do any worse", Falmouth were awarded a penalty. He saved it.
Made me feel a bit better. I don't think I was born to be a heckler if I still recall that after 30 years! _________________ http://www.flickr.com/photos/derby1884/sets/ |

Just as well you did not ref this match; you would have needed to sharpen your pencil.

That was a massive escalation....Luckily I never had any intimidation when I reffed but you do have to wonder what if anything goes through the players heads _________________ Currently disposing of my collection so please email any wants lists to [email protected].

I refereed for a few years in local amateur leagues in the Potteries and elsewhere and my favourite tale was recounted to me by a player who had been on the pitch at he same time. A player, who was a real brute of a man, a scar on every finger and tattoos to match, went into an uncontrolled attempted tackle and almost demolished the poor player on the receiving end. The referee, who was of a certain age, elderly, summoned up all his courage and taking out his notebook said ,
" That deserves a booking" and hesitantly asked for his name.
Whereupon, the offending player took his pencil off him and snapped it in front of his face. His reply was to award his side a throw n. Happy days.
Seriusly a friend of mine , an experienced referee was running the line in a local match, Northern premier League standar and the abuse that was piled on to him by supporters was so much , when he returned home, he threw his kit bag in the shed and he forgot all about refereeing. Local leagues can be a lot of fun, referees need to enjoy the day and be part of the game. |
