Was that the hammer price? If not after fees, VAT etc the total purchase price will be around £275K. A price that most of us mere mortals can only dream about.

As the Auctioneer would say "you find me another Pele 1958 World Cup winners medal".

The Auction looks like it will provide a good pension for Pele (and his Management team). I hope they negotiated a flat fee for the whole auction and not the Auction house's usual commission rates!

I hope it was purchased by a Museum so that it can be put on permanent display and not a private individual who will stash it away for investment. Hopefully, not Sepp Blatter with his FIFA payoff!

that was the hammerprice!
I think he's donating some to his foundation but agree it would be great to see these medals at a museum.

Considering it's the biggest prize available in the biggest game in any sport the world, won by the most iconic name in the game it sounds like an absolute bargain. The price would be at least ten times as much for an equivalent piece of baseball memorabilia.

Pele's 1970 World Cup Winners medal went for even more! £346k!!

His collection sold for £3.6 mill. Very nice.

Interesting insight into the psychology/ random nature of auctions: I can't see why there would be much difference in value between the 1970 and 1958 medals (condition was similar I think; the 1962, when he didn't play/score 'logically' sold for less) yet one sold for 50% more than the other!!

the 1970 team are regarded as 'the greatest' team ever, and to win the world cup so the buyer probably sees this as a reason to spend more.

'58 was his debut and Pele's arrival but i would have thought it's also up there with 1970.

it's an interesting one though, 1962 not valued at all!!!

how much did Sir Stanley Mathews 1953 medal sell for, £250k? so it's about the legendary status of the game maybe?

I think the prices of the World Cup medals were fair and, in fact, good value when viewed from a wider sports memorabilia context.

However, I was surprised by the exceptionally high prices that many other items attracted.

I won 2 lots but was shut out on many more, despite placing bids that were overly generous (caught up in the auction excitement).
