Post subject: SELLING UP - MANCHESTER UNITED COLLECTION |

|
The day has come, I have been mulling it over for months, since last summer in truth.
For various reasons I have just fallen out of love with the hobby, and the game too I suppose.
At 37 years old, a former season ticket holder at Old Trafford, a collector of memorabilia for 8 years or so and a Utd follower at games since 2000 and generally since 1984, I have just lost the passion for football.
And so, I have approx 10,000 items in total, comprising roughly of approx 5,000 programmes dating from 46/47 - 12/13, home and away, leagues, cups, euros, friendlies, reserve and youth, tournaments, neutral games and various other events at Old Trafford, approx. 1,000 home and away tickets, including season ticket books, approx. 1,000 handbooks, membership stuff, books, autobiographies, magazines, dozens of shirts, pictures, autographs, stickers, cards, newspapers, official programme binders and much much more. I also have a couple of thousand duplicate programmes.
I have bought largely from collections on Ebay initially, then single items as and when I wanted them, finally moving onto fairs in the last couple of years, of which I have met a handful of great blokes, you know who you all are.
I'm not even sad to be offering my entire collection for sale, see this pic for an idea of how its stored etc...
http://www.footballprogrammece.....p;start=60
I could start selling the rarer, older etc stuff on Ebay, but thought I would offer it here first for 2 reasons:
Firstly, I have purchased a lot of items from quite a few of you on here and that has always been appreciated, so time to offer it back.
Secondly, this forum gave me alot of help, advice, information and contacts and again, hugely appreciated so this is everyone who posts heres chance to acquire something.
I don't have a list, I do however have EVERYTHING sorted into categories on my personal database, so I can look up anything with ease.
Ask me for what you might require, I will let you know condition etc, and you can make me an offer. I'm not looking for stupid prices, and I am more than willing to strike a deal, I will however happily sell on Ebay if this approach doesn't work, so go mad!!
Cheers, Paul. |

Sad to hear you are selling your collection, i met you at last years London Fair and you bought a few programmes from me. I believe falling out of love with football is a common theme amongst many old timers as the money in the game has totally changed football for ever. I have not enjoyed football these last few seasons like i used to.
I believe non league football is the future for the die hard football fan.
I dont expect you have any United v Blackburn reserve or lancs cup issues pre 1955, but if you do please let me know, regards Clive |

Been that and I'm still a firm believer of such, you are more than just a number at non-league football. The club does truely move in the direction YOU want _________________ www.programmehut.com - The Internet Dealers

If you want my advise , I would try and get rid of the ordinary stuff ( if you can ) and hold on to the rare stuff.
In my 20s I did exactly the same. Got fed up and sold everything. I now kick myself every day. Thinking of the stuff I had and the silly prices they go for now almost makes me want to cry.
I don't know what your financial situation is , but I would, if possible hold the old and rare items. Downsizing is not a bad idea if you've fallen out of love with football , but believe me if you ever get the bug again you'll bless the day you decided to keep the good stuff. And if you don't collect again, then think of it as a pension. |

You will regret selling when you get older.
So here they come one by one, have you got this ? have you got that?
They will take the best off you for as little as possible and leave you with the dross
Auction the whole lot in one go. Or ask a few shifty dealers around to give you a rock bottom price. |

absolute. my tongue was firmly in my cheek. If you going to sell then get the best price possible. You don't owe anyone favours.
Putting the whole collection in one lot could be tricky. Easier for you as it's a massive collection. Good luck whatever you decide. |

All we need now is Man City Liverpool Chelsea + Arsenal to sink into oblivion and then we can all play football on an equal platform. |

I couldn't agree more. I sort of half-watched the Spurs game this evening at a friend's house and she, rightly in my opinion, remarked that the whole thing just looked too "clinical". Not just the football but also the stadium, the advertising boards etc etc. Only the Benfica fans seemed to offer any diversity. The home fans just sat there like they were at the bloody theatre.
Nowadays I find myself checking the "Non League Matters" site for the latest tables long before I look at any of what I still call divisions 1 to 4.
PS - if you have any Man Utd v Derby reserve issues pre-1955, I will offer you a more than fair price.... _________________ http://www.flickr.com/photos/derby1884/sets/ |

Agree with the above, i have a much better day out now at non-league than the sterile top tier. Also as someone who foollishly sold their collection a couple of decades ago, to take a long term view Pablo before flogging it off. |

Good luck Pablo, with whatever you decide.
You may have some wise words of wisdom for JayD73 elsewhere on this forum, as he is looking to sell his Leeds United collection as well.
In fact everyone may have some wise words of wisdom for JayD73 ?
Its a tough prospect, with tough decisions ahead to be made, I just hope that you choose the right decision for your circumstance and don't regret it into the future.
Ultimately only you can decide.
Good luck. |

I still dream of the day when we return to only playing on a saturday and at 3 o'clock kick off.
Only the league champions go into the european cup.

Sad day Paul but I hope you don't regret this. I fell out of love with football when I was about 30 - mid 80's (Palace - the Mullery years - Heysel, Bradford fire etc) - I missed 2 or 3 seasons at Selhurst, and just kept my collection in boxes. Then I started going again under Coppell and then suddenly the collecting bug was re-kindled about 10 years later and finally I discovered press photos and I was completely hooked. And I am so glad I hung on to my original collection.
Whatever you do, don't end up regretting it.
If you have any original press photos, just let me know and I'll buy them at a decent price and then sell them back to collectors without resorting to EBay. |

What Pete said makes sense,i've been disgusted with my own club & had many disputes with them for many years.I f I get that way that I can't take any more from them i'll just sit on my collection until I get over it and I will,I always do. |

I can only agree with all the others & keep the collection.
But there's quite a few grand there even at rock bottom prices.......
Will a dealer make a decent offer, will 'Pablo76' get his outlay back..... _________________ RESPECT..................

Hi,
Can only say you have come to the right place for advice. I have had great advice in the past from several contributors such as Treble99 and Manchesterunitedman1, for no other reason than that I asked. All they were doing was passing on their experience and expertise to a relative novice. With regards falling out of love with the game, I am like many others who had watched the top division all his life and then suddenly in 2005 decided I didn't want the travel anymore. I didn't fall out of love with the game, just the greed is good league. I am now a season ticket holder at Gateshead, and getting loads of pleasure out of watching this standard of football |
