Who would be a dealer ?

Looking through the sold list for pompey......

arsenal v pompey 1930/31......£8

Boro v pompey 1960........£1

If fact most are a quid

The only programmes going for any value are reserve & friendlies

So to make a profit collections must be bought for next to nothing

I stick mine in the loft & wait another 10 years

All businesses have good and bad years though - unless you're a hedge fund manager or senior Barclay's director and then it's never bad.

Don't forget that before the onset of ebay being a dealer was tantamount to being able to print money, but times change and people have to change with it. How many dealers though change their pricing structure to meet the new demand?

Dealers with decent stock, who work hard at what they do will still make money, although obtaining decent stock is now far more pricier than before, because a lot of it is done at auction. Having said that, it cuts down on the need for so much advertising if the dealer has his diary set out with budgets for each auction. In that respect, I doubt it's ever been easier?

Everyone's now got the common or garden stuff, so you're right, it's the items that people have been turning to for some time now like reserves that can realise decent prices. But it was ever thus, surely?

I am a law abiding citizen and I can sell legally on eBay. Your comment suggests that anyone who is not a dealer is a criminal.

You choose to use eBay as a vechile to trade, I'm guessing it has its benefits otherwise you wouldn't do it. It's also your choice to earn a living trading in football memobilia. Can't see how everyone else is at fault for using eBay as a legal selling tool.

I'm a dealer, I had my best year for five year 2013 and 2014 looks like going the same way. Might be something to do with I don't sell on ebay and never really have used it for business.

I would say I was a full-time dealer either as 50% of my income comes from other work I do on the internet.

I think the internet changed everything. First people saw it was an easy way to make money and then even easier when ebay came along. But using ebay can make people idle, they start ignoring the overall market place and stop doing "business" simply because ebay brings them their sales they don't have to go out and get them.

Thats fine if it was a closed club but because anyone is a mobi phone can now do the same you are falling over each other from the same buyers. It's like deciding only to sell to people with blue eyes. Most of my customers don't use ebay Smile

Yes, a bit of a sweeping statement there Bazza....I have over 1200 feedbacks yet the football memorabilia that I`m selling on Ebay at the moment are the first items I`ve put on for two and a half years ! not exactly the crafty ploys of a dealer.

I`m not saying I`ve never sold before and will probably start to sell my entire collection in about ten years time possibly mainly on Ebay but it`s a fact that it`s my buying which has pushed me over the 1000 feedback mark in recent years and NOT my selling. Read It

Just to sit with mustard68 and markb9060 that I too have a 1000 feedback not from selling and to refute Bazza's sweeping generalisation about Ebay feedback. This is a forum for sellers and collectors, though the distinction can sometimes become blurred.

I too have feedback of just over 1000 and from that a cool 12 are from selling, all since January.

The first 300-400 would have been accrued from buying Palace programmes & other stuff, the last 600-700 are from buying press photos either for resale or for my CPFC collection.

I started full time on the website in Jan 2013, but I now work part-time alongside running it and will declare it all in Jan 2015.

Good enough for Bazza? I wonder.

A lot of ebay sellers are dealers, they buy items to sell and make a profit.

Dont come this Bollox they are programmes from my collection.. Ive been to many auctions and seen these so called collectors buying lot after lot and they end up on Ebay.
So just admit it and pay your taxes like the rest of us. Very Happy

Bazza, no-one is disputing the fact that there are plenty of people selling programmes on ebay to make money. To what extent that makes them full time/part time dealers depends on the level of trade and profit margin. The point that some of us were making is that there are quite a few people with 1000 plus feedbacks who are collectors and who are not dealers per se.

so what would a dealer pay for a 1950's programme collection ?

A 1960's collection ?

Would they touch 1970 onwards ????

Its not the buying feedbacks that is the problem..
Its the selling feedbacks.

FROM EBAY SITE

How do I decide whether I'm operating as a business?
For most business sellers it should be obvious – if you're operating as a business in the real world, and your eBay selling activities are connected with this business, then you should register as an eBay business.

But if you're not sure…

Choose a business account if you:

sell items that you have bought to resell ************
make items yourself and sell them, intending to make a profit
are a Trading Assistant
buy items for your business on eBay

Selling is part of the hobby,I don't know if it has always been that way,but when you buy bulk items, getting doubles is unavoidable. I bought 500 Rangers and got 75 that I didn't have, what do I do with the rest? it's a no brainer really.I also bought 300 and got 4 I didn't have. I have a collection of 3,000 rangers and i'm all about collecting,I find selling a hassle but if I try and recoup some of my outlay on ebay and it goes to funding the expansion of my collection. If I ever decided to become a business seller I wouldn't be f'cking around with run of the mill items and moaning my tits off because a lot of others are doing it.
