Post subject: Footballers Surnames Trivia |
|
|
I once read on football stats/trivia site that there were only about 7 or so players who had the same surname as the team they played for.
However I worked out that Fred and Arthur Blackburn (easily searchable on Wikipedia) were the only set of brothers in the entire history of the football league who played for a club whose name was the same as their surname...Blackburn Rovers
Why my interest?....well you see Fred and Arthur Blackburn were my Great Great Uncles (me being Mark Blackburn) so there ya go.
Incidentally, what compelled to mention this was an earlier post which showed a modern Blackburn Rovers teamsheet from 1890. If the sheet was 5 or so years later, even I may have shown an interest.
I say maybe ! |

I should have mentioned that I think this was an English related stat. |

How about this one as well. I think i'm right in saying Mike England was Welsh and Jason Scotland is Jamaican or something. |

There's also Bill Glazier of Crystal Palace, and Alan Peacock of Leeds.
Any more? |

In terms of footballing families, can any other family match the Moore's at Grimsby Town?
Brothers Andy, Dave, and Kevin (sadly deceased recently) all played in the 1970's / 1980's for the club. Their father Roy and Uncle Norman also played for the club. |

Wasn't there a game a couple of weeks ago in the Football League where father & son managed opposite teams that took part in the game. |

Wasn't it Oldham (the sons team) who beat Yeovil (the dads) team! |

Yes, Gary Johnson (Yeovil) and his son Lee at Oldham. |

Going back into the Mid-70's and Wolves had a young goalkeeper on the books by the name of Alan Molyneux. Unfortunately he never made it past the third team but did actually play a couple of games on the ground with the same name as he. |

Thanks the the imput everyone.
Just going back to my Great Great Uncles Fred and Arthur (or Art) Blackburn.
I did a little more research (bearing in mind they played over 100 years ago) and was amazed and proud to find out that Fred actually scored on his debut for England.
Actually Blackburn Rovers have very little on Fred and weren`t particularly helpful but West Ham who he later played for were very helpful to my late father a few years ago when he was asking for info. In a way though, that`s what you`d expect from West Ham...a proper 'family club' who would bend over backwards to help....this coming from a Man Utd fan ! |

Pity that doesn't extend to some of the fans regarding their disgusting and yobbish behaviour towards women and children at last years Championship play off final |

Yes, I suppose if you have a hard nitty gritty no nonsense family club, you`l also have unruly family (not) members. |

I recall seing Rotherham play Liverpool at Anfield late 50s early 60s whose keeper was a guy called Roy Ironside , and if i am correct Rotherham at this time were nick-named The Ironsiders. _________________ "Some people say Wolves best days are gone i prefer to think the best are yet to come" Derek Dougan on joining Wolves from Leicester City 1967. |

Ronald (Danny) BOLTON Signed for Bolton Wanderers May 1939.
My stats do not show him having played a Football League game
although he may have played during wartime. After the war he
played for Rotherham United 1948-54.
Lewis BRADFORD played for Bradford City 1946-48. |
