As some of you may know I write the Past Pirate page in the Bristol Rovers Programme.
This season I have been reviewing all the League 1 issues.
Thought some of you may be interested in how I ended up ranking them, For fans in this division how would you have ranked them?
1,Exeter City. 2,Bristol Rovers. 3,Rochdale. 4,Peterborough. 5,Colchester.6,Bournemouth. 7,Brentford. 8,Charlton. 9,Swindon. 10,Walsall. 11,Huddersfield. 12,Brighton. 13,Notts Cnty. 14,Dag & Red. 15,MK Dons.16,Sheffield W. 17,Oldham Athletic. 18,Plymouth. 19,Leyton O. 20,Yeovil. 21,Tranmere. 22,Hartlepool. 23,Southampton. 24,Carlisle.
No offence intended to those at the bottom.
Could people with teams in other division do the same in another thread? _________________ I am not gas, I am a Pirate.

Seems about right to me. Do you write an article for each club - if so are you able to put on here what you said about the Carlisle one?! _________________ Regards,

Here you go.
-----------------------------------------------------
For many years now I have thought that football programmes were getting TOO big and bulky. I have begun to think that maybe it might be better if they were a bit smaller with less pages and of course a bit cheaper to buy. Well the Carlisle issue is one I have been looking forward to as they have done just this. It is an A5 issue with 20 pages and costs just £1.00. Beginning as always, with the cover, it is a good start. It is probably the best laid out one so far with nice clear lettering for those of us that need large print to be able to read. The colours they have chosen stand out well from the background as well. Good stuff. Inside on page 3 United Manager Greg Abbott gives his thoughts on the afternoon’s game and the near future of the Cumbrians’. Moving on to page 5 we find “Shooting Stars” which takes a look at five of Rovers greatest goal scorers. You will have to make your own mind up as to which one will top your list. The usual club statistics are found on pages 8 and 9 while the following two contain the match details with space to fill in who played and who scored. Fair bit to fill in for the home fans sadly. Page 13 finds a “Welcome to Rovers” while the next 3 give info and pen pics on our players. Finally pages 18 and 19 see all the stats on the season for the home fans. I have to say though that the font size they have used for the league table must be the smallest in the history of football programmes. You don’t need glasses to read it. Something like a large telescope is required. For this experiment to work I feel that the price needs to come down by a larger percent than the content within. So with an overall price of 5p per page things seem as good as most but! It’s the price per page of real reading matter where things fall down. It works out at 17p for each page you get to read which is the actually the 2nd worst of the season so far. There are still 6 full pages of adverts which cuts down hugely on space for articles which I think is a shame. Overall I fell that a bold experiment has not quite worked. Maybe Carlisle could have made a slightly larger issue with at least one or two pages for the fans to read and charged an extra 50p _________________ I am not gas, I am a Pirate.

I actually liked the Carlisle , Soton , Orient issues and had them in my top 10 this year.
I have my own club Sheff Weds as a bottom 3 along with Huddersfield and Brighton.
Interesting thought provoking post though............. |

Here you go SJ. This was written in early September by the way.
------------------------------------------------------------------
Peterborough United v Bristol Rovers 7-August-2010. 165x240mm. £3.00
Perfect binding with 84 pages The Posh started the season of away programmes in style. Or at least it looked that way when I first glanced at it. Home fans get around 28 pages of information to read at half time, while the away contingent have to make do with just 5. This works out at about 9p per page of content. Time will tell if this will be a good price when more programmes arrive at Past Pirate HQ. (IE my house). The full 84 pages work out at 4p per page and this is a figure that will be hard to beat. The trouble with producing a programme with such a large number of pages is that it has to be paid for. One way to manage this is to increase the amount of advertisements within. United have 17 full pages taken up with these type of pages. Whether more pages overall compensates for this increase in commercial content I am not too sure. Again we will have to wait until more programmes have been seen. At first I thought the cover appeared well laid out but unfortunately the match details are very small. This is ok for the home fans as it’s in the same place for each game. But when you are trying to find a particular programme amongst a season of twenty odd away issues it can make life very difficult. Just one of my many requests to all the editors out there in League 1. Please can you make those details easy to find. Another thing I look for is, are there any articles that can be enjoyed by not just the fans at the game but anyone else reading them later? The sort of thing that when looked at a few years later can give you an insight into what was going on at the club and football in general during that period. In this case the answer is no which I believe is a shame. I award this one 259 points. A score that I think will put it towards the top of the table but I imagine that there will be better to come and no doubt a lot worse. _________________ I am not gas, I am a Pirate.
