I can recommend early retirement!

Not trying to appear flippant, because I realise I'm in a very fortunate position to be able to afford to retire early from my job in local government, but having the ability to do so has energised me and made me feel better (not younger unfortunately!) already.
Had originally intend opening a wee shop in the Dumfries area but it is now patently the wrong time to do so, but I will be doing the football memorabilia and programme business from home now, on a full time basis. Will be doing some of the larger antique fairs in England and Scotland through the summer, and regular, weekly, car boot sales in Dumfries where I hope to build up a regular clientele.
If any Forum member is thinking of coming up to Scotland AT ANY TIME please don't hesitate to get in touch if you're looking to get any kind of football programmes or memorabilia from your visit north of the border. Even if it's just a chat about the game over a cup of coffee you'll be made more than welcome. All I ask is that you give me good notice of your proposed arrival date so that I can ensure I'm around at the time.

You're retirement plans look great and I wish you all the best with your quest.
I'd love to be able to go to all the programme auctions when I retire and pick up the bargains that I miss whilst working. Not far from paying off the mortgage so maybe I could go part time?

I have been overpaying my mortgage to clear as quickly as possible and have been buying and selling on ebay for years. I reckon I have made over £10K this way and would love to do what Auchinleckian is doing. I have moved down to a four day week so that I can look after my daughter on a Monday and when she is a bit older I would like to stay at four days and ramp up my trading as I enjoy it far more than working.

I use the term in it's loosest sense, being an atheist, but I really do love Scotland, it's culture, and it's people...very much the same way as I do Wales. It's a Celtic thing, obviously?
First car boot sale of the season this Sunday in Dumfries, and I reckon if I give it a good go for a few months it could be as good as having a shop. It's all about availability and folk knowing of it.

Mortage ? Only about 3 years to go for us

I retired from working for other people about ten years ago at about 40 years ago. Since then I've worked longer hours but those hours have been when I wanted to work and for the amount I wanted to work for. Not really a living but as my partner wants to work all I have to do is pay for luxury items and holidays.

I think you do need something to do when your retire, I've seen a fair few people leave work at 65 and within a year or so they have popped their cloggs. You need to keep your mind and body active.

Currently that's no problem for me as I'm struggling to update 8 web sites all needed yesterday

I retired fifteen months ago (early) 63 ,mainly to look after my sick wife ,after 45 years with the same firm thought it a good idea.
I have never been so busy in my bippy, my youngest daughter had a baby boy no long before i retired so after my six nippers moved on i am back into to nappy biz two days a week while daughter is at work .
I also spend several hours a week tending the graveyard at my local Church somthing i have been involved in since i became a Christion and gave my life to the Lord some 30+years ago.
Retirement though has been a great time for me so far in the little time i have to myselfe in the day updating my memrobilia of wich i have been greatly interested since the early 60s.

Very jealos (spelling?) of anyone that has retired. Been working for 34 years now and have a fair few to go before I can retire myself. Once I do I can see me doing many hours a week helping Rovers supporters club out, Can't wait

Only 6 years left before I reach the official retirement age but intend not to finish abruptly, so will wind down slowly over the next few years, will hopefully then carry on selling progs etc. Although with a 9 month old grandson I can see him taking alot of my time up. Looking forward to taking him to the Walkers Stadium even if it means dragging him there as a sort of punishment (and believe me watching Leicester sometimes does seem like a punishment). He is already a member of the junior foxes so at least he is being brought up properly.

I've been 'retired' since I was made redundant at 53 some 20 years ago. To be honest I now wonder how I actually managed to fit work in.
