Post subject: Full FA Cup Final Programme Collection obtained |
|

Hi...I am a record buyer but recently bought a gentlemans collection of FA Cup Final programmes..He has gone into a nursing home at the beginning of March and has entrusted me with selling his programme collection.Every FA Cup Final programme is there from 1923 to 2010 !..I realise that that is a very brave statement but it is true and there are no copies, reprints, facsimilies or bootlegs...First Wembley Final 1923 in really good condition...1924 with the original dust cover..1925 in brilliant condition..1926 with a little pencilled writing on the front but really good..1927 Cardiff..great..1928,1929..Bolton again..1930 Arsenal in very good nick..1931 and 1932 which are very simular..1933 Everton..1934 and 1935 all good..1936,1937,1938 and 1939..all in used but very good condition for their age..1946 and 1947 are fine..United in 1948,1949 is very good as is Arsenal in 1950..Newcastle in 1951&2 are almost mint..Blackpool in 1953 has some ink wriing inside that states Matthews was brilliant !..1954,1955,1956 are all present..Villa in 1957 and Bolton in 1958..To continue 1959,1960,1961,1962,1963 all in very good condition and all originals..West Ham in 1964,Liverpool in 1965 all nice and glossy,1965,66,67,68,69..remember no copies or reprints of any kind.1970 with replay..1972 through to 1979..1980 is very good..Both 1981 final programmes,Both 1982 and both 1983 programmes...1984-1989 inclusive,Both 1990 games..in fact every FA Cup Final programme ever held at Wembley and Cardiff...I realise that this is quite a collection and I have already had some enquiries, most asking will I split the collection...What could I reasonably expect as I am no expert but it would be a shame to split up this set that almost seems to good to be true or so the first people to see the collection thought until they saw it !..The 1924 seems to get the most attention...Any comments would be appreciated. |

Personally I think you will get more for it if you split and Cup Final weekend is a good time to list on ebay, or you good put the whole collection in with a well known auction house to sell it one hit.
But there is a lot of dross in a Cup collection which makes selling the 'good ones' seem more rewarding |

In my opinion you should keep the collection together and sell in one lot. Go to a reputable auction house and try and negotiate a reduction in commission - best of luck!

Hi...I appreciate you taking the time to reply..I have had a few people view the collection but every one of them has wanted me to say how much I would take but none would ever make an offer..Is this the right way that programmes are sold ?...I know they are worth something but would have appreciated at least one of the guys who stated that he had driven 80 miles to make an offer,it seems that they are waiting for me to commit myself..... |

Many thanks for that...I had a guy come up from Chester who stated that he was from an auction house but really only wanted the 1924 programme...He said it was the best he'd ever seen...He did'nt make an offer but wanted me to say how much I wanted for it.... |

If i were you i would sell them individually over a few years at a well known sporting auction house of your choice. Either that or have an auctioneer come view and value your programmes and give you a true valuation. This will sort out the genuine collector looking to add a rare programme to his collection and willing to pay the going rate from the opportunist dealer looking to rob you blind. |

Thanks so much for your advice...I will do that and see what response I get...I know what you mean about the less savoury opportunists who would probably offer me £25 for the lot in the hope that I did'nt know what I had... |

You are out of order IMO. What is wrong with the guy asking the question.? After all he can get a free valuation from an auction house or a dealer should quote him the price he is willing to pay.It appears this has not been forthcoming. This section is called Queries about football programmes. He has asked a question, so what is your problem??
No need for your sarcastic comments. |

As a dealer myself my honest opion is it doesn't matter what you do, if you sell them it's up to the buyer what they do with them. If you sell them one at a time you almost certainly will get the best price for the whole.
From that you'll need to deduct your time and trouble and if you base that on the effort to use e bay you are looking at 10-20 mins for each item minimum. Then wraping & posting, perhaps 10mins each item if people buy more then one. Thats it all transactions go well and all sell. Thats about 90 finals or programmes.
30mins per programme sold = 45 hours
Then you need to deduct paypal fees at about 4-5%
Possible ebay fees of 10%
I would be interested in buying the lot. I would only sell on those that were worse then the ones I already had because although I'm a dealer I'm also a collector too. |

There are currently 1157 members of this site.
There will be dealers amongst them but I'd suggest most of us are collectors and given the posts most of us are happy to share information free gratis
Long may that continue
I agree with 1980Cossie. Get them to a reputable auction house and let us, the buying public, do the rest. |

I agree with the first statment, I spend most of my week doing valuations for people free of charge. But I try to assertain how likely the person is to sell the item(s). If they have no intention to sell then its a price to replace - if they need to sell then it's a price we could pay in the current market, with a view to resell for profit within a year.
I strongly disagree with taking them to auction house. The seller might be charged 20% and the buyer might charged 10% and then both have to pay VAT at 20% |

Thats what makes life so great. We've all got our own opinions and it makes for heathy discussions
Some months ago I suggested on this site that we establish a programme valuation guide and by pooling our collective knowledge it could become the definitive knowledge base. That idea fell on deaf ears. Its still something I'd recommend. but having said that the value of an item can only be what it last sold for. Or so it seems for Sheff Wednesday items where the prices are falling almost as fast as the quality of football produced by the team |
