Apparently Beryl Cook was commissioned to paint this great Torquay Unt cover. Can’t recall any other famous painters that have had their work featured on football programme covers ?

Had never seen that before, thanks for sharing!

In terms of 'famous' artists, I don't really know a lot about art and artists to be honest.

But I would say over the last 10 years or so, several clubs have tried having artists do their programme covers

West Brom in particular have had loads of artists do covers. Sometimes different themes, like football versions of famous record covers etc

Hopefully this link works:

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-4409468/West-Brom-s-sensational-programme-covers.html

The one of the Beatles is fantastic!

I think the most 'famous' artist I know of who has done lots of programme covers is an American artist called Paine Profitt

He specialises in sport inspired art, with quite a 'retro' style, and 'working man' heritage themes

He has done a few clubs, including Aberdeen and (the always innovative) WBA

It's nice to think that for a few quid you can buy a piece of artwork!

and the artist sells limited edition prints of them of course!

Guide about his work here:

Continuing on, nowadays a lot of modern graphic artists have been used by clubs to do bold covers

They may not be famous, but in my opinion, anything which makes a programme attractive and collectible can only be a good thing!

Brentford:

Brighton this season (fantastic covers, which are replicated on a folded poster inside each issue)...

WOLVES from a few years ago, which we had a thread discussing them at the time!

Finally a mention for Palace, who this season are doing a series of covers to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Selhurst Park

The artist has done a 'timeline' across all the covers, (they all join up) each cover is a memorable thing to do with Selhurst Park and it's history and games etc

As I say, anything that makes people want to buy and collect the programmes can only be a good thing

Many clubs at the very top level make a real effort with the programmes now, I guess they can't not have programmes - it is expected, but they want them to do well too

Thanks Dorking, I’ll enjoy having a look through all the items you have mentioned . Some of that artwork is outstanding. . I’ve seen the West Brom Sgt Pepper cover before. Apparently McCartney wanted his dad’s hero Dixie Dean on the original Beatles’ cover , but Lennon ( who wasn’t into football) liked the quirky sound of Liverpool’s Albert Stubbins’ name and he replaced Dixie with Albert. I’ve always liked the cover of this Wolves post-war issue.
