holtie, a rough translation:: “ How The Englaender Play Football. The football season in England has begun. The teams of the different leagues train eagerly for the cup competitions. Our picture shows the team of Carlton Club practicing to gain the safety kick . They kick the ball against a wall with numbered fields.” Looks like the team is named Carlton FC, which could be anywhere in the country but probably London. The London Carlton Club had strong cricket links and l think it was bombed during the war. I have read somewhere that Hitler absolutely loathed cricket, so he probably picked that target out for a bomb personally lol . I have noticed before that German photographers seemed to have carte Blanche just before the war to wonder around the country taking photos of whatever took their fancy. If you are going to bother taking photos of a football team, why not a top team of the day during pre-season,, Arsenal, Everton etc? Why Carlton FC. Looks like any team would fit the bill, before they took shots of ‘ more interesting’ places such as factories , the docks and other future bombing targets.. I can’t image for one minute that the German photographers were actually spies, the photos were for a magazine article after all |

You got in before me Jim. Could well be Charlton with the wrong spelling? There’s a theory in some books that Hitler had already done a reckie of the city and the docks when he used to visit a relative of his who lived in Liverpool pre-war. |

Holtie put this photo on Twitter last night and got a few comments like this:-
There was a Carlton social club in Liverpool.
A bit of research shows that Liverpool fc used it for their agm's/meetings etc. Not sure if the above photo is linked though.
and
Checking in the BNA and after searching 'Carlton', '1940-49', 'Lancashire', 'Liverpool' - it comes up with a list of results for Carlton listed in the Liverpool echo at the time.
and
Found one 1949 reference im the BNA to a Carlton Social & Football Club in Bevington Hill Liverpool. Google Maps puts Bevington Hill just off Scotty Road near the Kingsway tunnel. Something about a licquor dispute as it was an unlicensed club!
So maybe back to the drawing board, guys? |

Thanks as always for your help everyone, currently two schools of thought
1. Carlton football club who played the likes of Liverpool and Everton reserves in the war years
Or
2, it’s Charlton Athletic as the 2nd guy from the left looks very similar to Jimmy Oakes (1933-1939) which would match the approximate year of another photo I acquired from the same source. |
