On the Programme On This Day August thread there are some great pics of the 'old' Stamfod Bridge showing the Dog Track before major redevelopment.
Anyone else remember the 3 sided grounds at Sheffield Utd and Northampton Town who shared with the County Cricket Club?

The 'NEW' stand was the East Stand which is where the photographs were taken, but the ticket is from the opposite side West Stand, which was still relatively new itself being 10 years old.
This game was the start of the rot that blighted Chelsea for years, relegated that season the club was effectively bankrupt until Ken Bates took over many years later.

Just checked and the description does just say “view from new stand”. Not sure why I thought it was the west stand but my sense of direction has never been a strong point!

I visited the old County Ground to see Carlisle at Northampton on a couple of occasions. At the time I thought it was an awful place to watch football but I think I now prefer it to visiting Sixfields and similar modern grounds.

I was at Bramall Lane in 1978 for their Alex Sabella inspired League Cup win over my team. I think the cricket pavilion was demolished a couple of years later?!

I went to Northampton v Palace in 1976/7. Best thing about that game was Cobblers getting a penalty, taken by John Gregory. He scored, and the ball came back to him. He wellied it back in and the Palace keeper Tony Burns, who was on his knees, had his hair parted by the ball and then ruffled by Gregory. Words were exchanged and then Burns got up and chased Gregory down the ground till he was rescued by the Cobblers bench. Must admit, it's the first and only time I've been in stitches following Palace letting a goal in. And we lost 3-0.

Another 3 sided-ground was Aldershot, who just had a high mesh fence behind one goal. We lost that one too, 1-0, Boxing Day 1975 I think.

I seem to remember Burnden Park (Bolton) was 3 and 1/2 sides with the Railway End behind one goal a half end with the rest taken up by a Supermarket.
Then again it may just be my memory playing tricks............... again!

I think it was the Co Op or Normid. The good thing was that being in the away end, we never had to look at the eyesore!! Very Happy

Remember going to Bramall Lane, around 1958, travelling on a football special and walking from the station to the ground. We stood behind one goal to yell our team on and thought the ground was unusual with three sides of spectators and a cricket square to the side of one touchline. The pavillion sat high up to our left. Stoke lost, I think 2-1 and I remember when the ball went out for a throw in on the cricket side it took a while to get it back into play. Great character, happy days. I also loved Yorkshire cricket as a lad so it was a place full of interest although Yorkshire didn't seem to play too many games there.

Before they built the new stadium for the Texas Rangers in 1994, the old stadium had metal bench type seating out in the bleachers. The first game I went to when I moved here in 1988 was in August and the temperature was 105. Not very pleasant sitting on those benches.
