Unusual in that it advertises a match the following day at another ground and not involving Stoke.

6th August 2016

Bolton Wanderers v Sheffield United (League 1)

Chris Wilders 1st game in charge ends in defeat at Bolton

After four games, and 1 point, many United fans were claiming that the job was too big and wanted Wilder out. Good job nobody was listening.
Champions with 100 points.

7th August 2018

Middlesbrough v Sheffield United (Championship)

United start the season with a second successive defeat, things just got better after that, and we finish runners up

Leeds Utd start their 1st ever season in League 1 (the old Division3) with a visit to Tranmere Rovers:

Leeds started the season on -15 points as punishment for exiting Administartion without a formal Creditors Voluntary Agreement (CVA).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DSVWwY6CscA

The 2-1 victory for Leeds was the 1st of 7 straight wins to clear the -15 points. providing a solid strart that lead to the Play-Off Final only to fail to turn up in losing 1-0 to Doncaster Rovers.

12th August 1961

DWS Amsterdam v Sheffield United (Friendly).

Very rare friendly programme not to be confused with the one at the end of the 1960-1 season played three months before,

13th August 1967

Holstein Kiel v Bergedorf 85 (German Regional Nord)

14th August 1971

Sheffield United v Southampton (Division 1)

Opening match of the 1971-2 season and one of the first programmes my old man gave me. Gave me about a dozen one day that year and remarkably this is still the copy I got off him.

44 years ago today.

Derby 1 Go Ahead 0

Start of a season of extremes for the Rams - our record victory (12-0 v Finn Harps), walloped Spurs 8-2 at the BBG........and didn't win a single away game all season.

17 August 1974
Chelsea 0 Carlisle United 2

This was Carlisle’s first top flight match and they won courtesy of goals from Bill Green and Les O Neill. I think this was one of the first matches where Chelsea’s new West Stand was used. I have included a copy ticket and a couple of long range photos described as view from the West Stand of the match in progress.

Southampton v Bournemouth 18/8/56 Div 3 South.

A 3-0 opening day Derby Day win for the Saints who would go on to finish 4th with Bournemouth one place behind them in 5th that season.

Both trailed Champions Ipswich who had begun their epic climb to lift the Division One Title within three years.
