I spent all day yesterday at Sportingold's auction and was delighted to win a few lots, one of which included this one, and I thought it was worth sharing with you:-



Billy Broadbent was born in Oldham in 1901 and presumably he just missed serving in WW1 or maybe he just caught the end of it. Anyway, he played 12 games for his home-town club between 1921 and 1923, where he is pictured, before he joined Brentford for 1924/5 (18 games) and then he went on to Clapton Orient staying for 7 years and playing about 200 games. He ended up with a couple of games at Preston. He died in 1979.

Great photo Pete. That style of shorts could come back! I think Dixie Dean was advised early in his career to tuck his shirt into his shorts. Apparently, when news of his fantastic heading ability spread , defenders would attempt to nullify his tremendous ability to leap above them by tugging onto his shorts. During one game , they were pulled completely down, leaving him standing there in just his jock strap!
