Looks like a few games will be called off this weekend. I can't understand why better flood defences have not been put in place after what happened in 2005!

I've heard Cockermouth is apparently affected aswell.

Hopefully the programme shop hasnt been ruined up there!

No money left to hold back the water.. all been spent on holes in road - and MPs expenses.

The big bridge that has collapsed is right next to Workington's football ground.

3 other bridges have collapsed which has virtually cut the town off. Looks awful

The thing is, when you spend millions on embankment improvements and flood defences, you are simply moving the problem downstream to the next weakest point

Thankfully I live on top of a hill and no where near a river Smile

The floods in 2005 were in Carlisle and a lot of money has been spent to stop the city from flooding again and so far in the main it seems to have worked - there's obviously some fields flooded but your never going to stop everything. If this hadn't been done large parts of the city would be under water again.

The two worst affected areas Cockermouth and Keswick are around 30 miles away.

The Cockermouth Antiques Market is on the first floor so I would imagine the stock hasn't been affected.

This was Brunton Park earlier today:

A policeman was killed when this collapsed - a 44 year old who would be turning 45 tomorrow.

Reminds me of shrewsburys old ground during the floods... RIP to the officer who died carrying out his duties.

The rain in Carlisle this afternoon has been very heavy and power is going off in some parts of the city now as there is a sub station by one of the rivers which I presume is starting to get flooded.

A lot of the roads especially over bridges to West Cumbria seem to be closing by the minute so it could be another rough night.

My family are stuck trying to get back to the West after the match but hopefully things will improve as they need to come back up tomorrow for my son's dedication!

I used to work for a water company.

This is so unexpected that work just can't keep up, I know are in a blame culture in this country but if you want to blame anyone blame that goverment that created home ownership a birth right. Thereby creating pressure for houses. What followed was building on flood planes, more concrete and massive out of town shopping malls to satisfy the need to spend as house price rises are realised.

That goverment was the conservertives.

The are already solutions to this flooding problem but it means massive deep holes been dug across towns. It's simple really, the normal infrastructure is there to take away normal weather. So you impliment another system to take away the water from that systme when needed. In it's basic for this is just a deep hole that fills from the existing system and then the water is pumped away later.

Unfortunately, people do not have long memories. One of the members on here who said that the government "spouted hot air" was only 3 years old when the great she witch came to power. All his adult life has been spent under a Brown / Blair neo con experiment with a social tinge. Hardly surprising then, that some people are desperate for change.
Personally I wouldn't pee on a Tory if they were on fire, but then I look at the Labour government and see them further to the right in their doctrine than Thatcher went. Yet, I would still vote for them, but only tactically, to keep a Tory out at all costs.
Anyway, what's this got to do with football? "Doctor!!"

Tell you what.. vote Lib Dem and you don't get the (dis)satisfaction of seeing your choice f**k it up..

Trouble with democracies such as ours is that you can't please all the people all the time (chances are you won't please anyone) and the political and economic climate is not conducive to progress.

The squaring the circle problem is that so much is expected from Government and guess who has to pay for it. The payment (taxes) is painful and the delivery is mixed (sometimes not good at all). It may be imperfect but I suggest it's a bit better than the alternatives.

I do agree that That-char was a very bad thing for Britain - I know that at the time I was voting Conservative but I haven't done so for perhaps 20 odd years.. I'm much wiser now - and I'm sure the next (very likely to be Tory) Government won't be a great success which is no comfort given that the current Government is very stale indeed after 12 years in power.

Anyway let's hope the current troubles in Cumbria abate soon.

The problem is we don't teach politics or even our own history in any great detail in our schools. That gives kids nothing to relate to and it's why we have lost our national idential and see a goverment as just a choice each 4 years or so. It's also why very few people understand how the process really works and why decisions taken 20-30 even 50 years can have a massive effect now. Just take coal 400 years worth of furture production lost under MT and we still use coal for 75% of our energy only now we buy from abroad all but an handfull.

Anyway sorry to stray, Cumbria was suppose to be hit by another bucket load last night but I've not seen any reports.

The weather has been terrible in Carlisle today, it's not stopped raining since midday and my parents in West Cumbria have said the same. The wind is getting up too so it could be another rough night for some.
