I don't understand. I thought the market was dynamic for the investor looking for rocket returns. Surely this is a choice item for a well known portfolio manager.

It seems to tick certain boxes at least.

This particular programme sold for £19,000 in 2006 roughly about the time I decided to build a serious collection myself.

Cast yourself back to that time....

I can remember regular Saturday/Sunday night battles on Ebay with frantic bidding/sniping wars.

Unfortunately many times I paid premium prices but other times grabbing bargains. So vibrant was the market with huge amounts of money being bid often taking risks to win your item which was a buzz in itself. You could even make a few quid out of it if you bought or sold at the right time (Im obviously talking about registered business sellers here ahem hmm hmm..tickly cough ! )

So what has happened to the market?

Unfortunately 2008 happened and it has never been the same since.

Im really hoping it will bounce back one day but on this evidence it hasn`t even scraped the floor yet.

Don`t get me wrong, I think things will improve but not for a while yet.

This is only my opinion and I could be wrong but I believe that the vast majority of people are far too worried about their jobs, rent/mortgages, money, debt to loosen their belts to buy football programmes.

In any case, most people I speak to about this hobby tend to look at me as if ;
(a) I`m extremely weird (which may be the case)
(b) I`m slightly foolish (which again may be the case)

maybe they know something we dont.

No disrespect to either club but if that programme had involved Manchester United it would have gone sky high with a number of buyers not thinking twice to compete for it[2 off them being multi-national corporations].

it was the 1909 Cup Final sold by Graham Budd went for 23,000 +hammer back then so add around 15%-that was a world record-4-5 years ago or so?

Then he got another one and that dropped to 16,000 or so + hammer

Bristol City v Manchester United is the game.

To my knowledge the only two to have been sold at Auction plus there was one in 2000 that was sold in a private sale for £16,000 i am aware.

I am a massive advocate of Graham Budd auctions as, for me, no other auction house comes close in terms of the variety of high quality football memorabilia - in particular, player collectiilons and high end items.

One thing I have noticed, however, is that the selection of programmes at these auctions has declined over recent years - fewer of the very high end programmes are appearing at his sales. It doesn't bother me in the slightest as I don't collect programmes but an observation nonetheless.

Interestingly, I was surprised to see the Yale versus Eton 1873 programme sell. Admittedly, at £15k + commission, it was below the £20k to £30k estimate but, from my perspective, still a multiple of what I would have projected it was worth.

Actually I think it is a Blackburn Rovers Cup Final which holds the record.
1882 against Old Etonians.

Correct...selling at Sotherby`s for over £35,000 making it easily the most valuable football programme at least in Britain?

As far as I am aware, Eton College still have it in their museum which is only down the road from where I now live so I may have a stroll down there.

Which goes back to my original message regarding the present value of football programmes.

What is crystal clear at least regarding your average football programme and possibly a few of the so called more valuable ones is that they have seriously deminished in value.

Yes even Manchester United programmes (shock horror) for example two George Best testimonial programmes recently sold for around £5, one of those was in mint condition.

These used to go for up to £50 a few years ago.

Sorry but this £11,000 programme loss just caught my eye and I felt that I needed to share my concerns.

I believe that this programme was found in an old diary in a box of other non-sport ephemera relating to the brother of one of the players in the Cup Final, at an Auction house not far from me.

And yes I did go to the viewing. Did I look at that lot? No, as the description did not spark any interest. Lot sold for not very much. Whether the buyer knew it was there or got a massive surprise I do not know. Either way a good find.

It just proves that desirable items are still out there and waiting to be found.
