Hi all.

Been having a chat with a Manchester United fan at work. I mentioned a game (European, I think) at OT where away fans lobbed a plum line which wrapped around the crossbar and they managed to pull down one of the goals. Kick-off was delayed while a new goal was found and installed.

Anyone remember this or can add any details? I'm certain I didn't dream it but can't find any reference to it online and he had no recollection of it.

Cheers.

I`m almost 100% certain that this 'incident' never occurred..sorry !

Just trying to examine the facts..

Firstly You`re not sure which game you mentioned to your mate or even if it was a European fixture?

Secondly, I`m really struggling to picture how a plum line could somehow bring down the goals. It would have had to have been a really long, really thick rope type thing which somehow got past security.

Thirdly, if this had actually happened it would have gone down as one of the biggest liberties ever taken by away fans at Old Trafford and I can assure you that very very few have managed that.

Last but not least, this is a huge wind up and you got me ? ....

Hook, Line and Sinker

and if that is the case I take my hat off to you sir !

This is genuinely weird. I did have that conversation at work, and I didn't make anything up (the 'hook, line and sinker' thing is pretty clever though).

I must have dreamed it, or perhaps it happened at a different ground/fixture. I'm genuinely flummoxed, as I can picture it in my head now, the end opposite the Stretford End (where the K Stand is, I think), and can hear the commentators describing it and the pundits (not sure who) killing time for the 20 minutes-or-so that it took to find another set of goalposts. I can even picture the fellas bringing out and assembling the new goal. I also thought it was against an Italian or Spanish side, but didn't mention that in my original post.

I've had this memory for a good long time and was genuinely surprised when my pal (an OT regular in the 80's and 90's) couldn't remember it.

So, there we go - all very odd. No intention to kid anyone on or whatever. Re. the physics of it, no an actual plumb line almost certainly couldn't have done it, but a thin steel cable probably could. And it wouldn't have had to be super long either, since away fans used to be directly behind the goal. But hey, I think we've established it probably didn't happen in reality...

But anyway. I'll try and keep my posts a little less weird from herein. As you were.

Don't suppose anyone can remember something like this ever happening in a televised European tie anywhere else can they? I'm seriously starting to doubt my own sanity...

(no snarky remarks about following Cowes, thanks)

Ha! No, I shall not. It can stand as testament to the fact that even I, occasionally, get something wrong Shocked

And, if in twenty years time someone posts along the lines of "Did I dream it or did some div once come on here asking about a goal getting pulled down?" at least there will be documentary evidence to back them up.

This did happen, but not at Man United. It was Real Madrid v Borussia Dortmund in 1998. Details on this link -

Peter! Thank-you! It wasn't quite how I remembered it (patently, seeing as I got the ground/teams wrong), but that must be it.

Thumbs Up Clap
