Burnley v Stoke, 28th March 1964. Clarets' captain John Angus and mascot meet up with visiting skipper Jimmy McIlroy, returning to his old haunts having departed in mysterious circumstances.

Blackburn v West Bromwich Albion, 1964, Clive Clark (right) putting Albion 2-up after 15 minutes. Sims and Else are the slightly blurred Rovers defenders.

Sheffield Weds v Aston Villa, 26th October 1963. Keeper Sims takes a cross with Sleeuwenhoek, Wright, debutant Pountney and Aitken (behind post on left) in support.

Sheffield United v Tottenham Hotspur, 6th October 1963. Blanchflower awaits developments as Blades' Pace and a Spurs defender (Hopkins or Norman maybe?) challenge.

And finally Spurs winger George Robb, who in December 1952 scored for Finchley v Palace in the FA Cup, and 11 months later was in the England team humiliated 6-3 by Hungary. How did that happen?

Full details on request.

Cheers Holtie!

I should point out that the Burnley v Stoke, the Blackburn v WBA and the Sheff Weds v Villa are now sold. Thank you to the buyers.

This one is featuring in my monthly article in Programme Monthly - Birmingham City players taking up boxing in the 70's - Trevor Francis and Joe Gallagher among them.

And this one's in the same article - Man City players golfing in the 1930's

I agree with this 100%.

I am a Northern Irish football fan (it is my only real sporting passion) but am a pretty serious collector of baseball photography and cannot believe just how under-rated original first generation photography is in football.

Enjoyed picking up items from Pete recently and will do so again when time allows.

In the meantime, this helps demonstrate the relative value of football photography:

Nice one, NYGiants - USD 75,000........... Brilliant photo though, Ty Cobb one of the great legends of baseball. Maybe if I had an original of Steve Bloomer or Charles Buchan scoring a match winning goal to win the Cup or something that it might fetch.......... £100?

You need a great close-up though, football affords that with photographers just alongside the goal - that's where cricket loses out in my view. Horse racing and boxing also allow great close-up views.

It is an iconic shot but, ironically, I think it is the only ever "action" photo in baseball that I can recall selling for 5 figures. The action photos tends to sell for less than the portraits, albeit the portraits need to be in uniform.

Generally, it is the portraits that sell for the 5 figures .... and it needs to be an iconic baseball player (Ruth, Cobb, Johnson, Gehrig etc) and also show by an iconic photographer - such as Charles Conlon, George Burke, Paul Thompson. Then add a multiple if the photographic image was the motivation behind a baseball card image.

I think what we, in the UK football photo community, don't have compared to baseball is that we don't have any understanding of the history of the football photographers of pre WWII - the photographers appear to generally be anonymous. I, for one, collect a specific baseball photographer (Charles Conlon) but cannot think of anything comparable over here. Positively, it is still often possible to obtain good value items n the UK.

Yes, £100 .... but, if in the condition of the Ty Cobb photo, then I would expect someone to beat you down to £60 or so.
