Go on then I will start the come on england (World Cup) topic to get us all in the spirit!!!

We are all real fans on here aren't we!

What are your thoughts on the world cup, who will win, who will fail miserably and who will be dark horses.

I think Argentina will win, France will go out and Serbia may be dark horses.

What about everybody else? Easy

I honestly think England will win.

I've drawn Argentina in the work sweep, and fancy Ghana as dark horses.

My World Cup week started well yesterday. Picked up the final sticker for the lads Panini album, and then bought ticket stubs for all 4 games played at Hillsborough in 66 for £20! Nod

Result!

Amazingly I have backed Argentina, had a little go on Serbia to get to the last four and had a little bet on Poldolski to finish top scorer! So very similar to you Steel City Smoggy.

oh and I also did a little accumlator on 6 of the 8 group winners. Thankfully I left group A out, as well as F.

I've put £0.50p on Heskey to win the Golden Boot.

England are basically the same this time as they were under Sven, Just quite a bit older. (The fact that he asked Carragher and Scholes if they were available is even more frightening, I heard Linekar & Platt were digging out their boots). The back four is nowhere near as good as the pundits are suggesting. Johnson's a liability when defending and Terry isn't quick enough, then there's the keeper. Joe Hart's been the best by far this season but he'll be third choice. Rob Green is a disaster waiting to happen, and Jambo's been injury plagued this season, and plays for what were the worst team in the Premier. Then there's the Gerrard/Lampard connundrum. Stevie G, as captain has to step up to the plate, because to be honest his performances this season don't even merit a place in the starting XI. Capello likes his holding midfield player, in particular Barry, but is he fit? If he isn't the rumour is that Carrick will play! The midfield will be key, can they get the support and service to Rooney? It's alright beating Algeria 1-0 when they've had plenty of possession, but the likes of the Spanish & Brazilians will dominate possession if they come up against us. Let's hope unlike recent England managers Fabio's got a plan B if things aren't happening. Bobby Robson had one, his name was Gazza.

It's not pessimism its realism, it won't stop me firing up the barbecue this afternoon and supporting the boys in the coming weeks. The semi's are possible as long as we avoid penalties along the way.

As for winning it, Heart says yes, head says no!

This isn't a xenophobic rant, but anybody but Ingerland, please! Both my boys are English (despite my being born Welsh) having been born within a spitting distance of Blundell Park, and I've absolutely nothing against the English as a race - I can't, I lived there for over 30 years, but I despise all the jingoistic fervour that attaches itself to any world cup campaign involving Ingerland.
As someone who has now lived in Scotland for the best part of 20 years I hate watching the BBC news (I don't watch ITV if I can ever help it) and hearing news presenters today talking of "the nation awaits" Not up here it don't!!!!!!!! The BBC is a British organisation, not English. It's small wonder that the whole of Scotland is going USA daft today, probably the same in Wales and certain parts of Northern Ireland.
I'll be rooting for the USA tonight, if only to hope that all the crap that pervades the news broadcasts will go away if the Yanks can do another Belo Horizonte. Unfortunately, I hate Bud, don't do hot dogs, despise anything Republican, so I'm in a kind of vacuum. Instead I'll have few wee nips of Scotland's finest amber nectar....and then a few more if the result goes the right way.

Easy Thumbs Up

After the Uruguay - France game last night they done a piece on the 1950 USA - England game. Very interesting, but they completely failed to mention that the Captain on the USA team that day was a Scot from Greenock, and the Team Manager was also a Scot. An oversight?

What do you call a Scotsman at the World Cup Finals?

A referee!

Fancy Spain, would like to see Italy win it, and South Africa are my outsiders.

I'd have thought that "interloper" might be a more appropriate term?

I don't think Fabio earned his wages last night.Wrong choice of goalkeeper, gamble on an injury prone centre half didn't come off and neither did the strange choices of Milner or Wright Phillips. No better a manager than Sven on last night's evidence.

On the bright side I thought England had more attacking talent than any side other than Argentina up to now and should still win the group and have a comfortable route to the last 4.

It's amazing isn't it? At half time the BBC pundits were saying that America's defence "couldn't live" with the England attack. Considering they did so for 86 minutes would seem to blow this ridiculous analysis right out of the water?
The BBC Breakfast news plumbed similar low depths again with a sombre headline of "A moment of joy, a moment of sorrow" For whom, apart from England fans? Complaint going in to the BBC news department anon.

The whole overkill by the media is what will drive me away from this years world cup. Who cares what so and so on the street, or over in a campsite in South Africa thinks, I can have these conversations with my mates. It just goes on and on!

So far I have only watched the games, no build up, no half time waffle and certainly no post match dribble! If everyone was like me then the BBC could bring home 450 of there 500+ staff and ITV could do similar!

I can only agree with you 'Oldbolt' but how much longer can these overpaid prima donnas continue to underachieve.
I hope I'm wrong but england really struggled against a team 6 places underneath them in the rankings, what will happen when we play a good team..................Mmmm

What every analyst has failed to do is to apportion some respect to America. They are, after all, ranked 14th in the FIFA world rankings, and only narrowly lost to Brazil in the final of last years Concaf tournament. They ain't dummies, and they have nearly 4,000,000 registered youth players in the country now. They'll be untouchable in 20 years time.
Doesn't anybody else think that England failed, not against a weak American team, but one who'd done their homework and stifled England? Rooney was largely anonymous; Lampard useless; crocks abounded in the first half before being replaced by fitter models; this was England at their laziest, due to hype and a misguided sense of self worth. I still think they'll qualify from the group stages, unfortunately..........

Totally agree John, the USA looked good and indeed could have won the match. They will cause most teams problems in World Cup and if they win the group could be dark horses themselves.

I agree about the USA, they're usually good for the second round these days and they're a decent enough team. A draw is still fine for England though, they should beat Algeria and Slovenia, although even four points might be enough to get through.

Ive been ranting to people for a long time about our apparent great national team.
If capello had had his way it would have been same team different tournement.
Beckham,scholes,carragher and so on.
We fail every time god help us beckham still thinks he will be good enough to play in 4 years time if cappelo is still there he probably will.
We need new blood in the team.
Rant over.
