Was looking through some of the offerings from clubs Derby have played over the last few years and, depressed at the generally crap standard, I ditched that idea and dug out a box of early 70s odds and ends. Like a breath of fresh air!
Got me thinking - what's your vote for the very best programme produced by any club at any point in time?

I narrowed it down to 3 possibilities (for me):

-Hull City's 74/5 issue
-Arsenal's 51/2 issue
-Everton's 38/9 issue

The Everton one is probably the best read but the Arsenal one is concise to the point where not a square inch is wasted. and the Hull one is, for me, a perfect example of what first drew me to the hobby all those (many) decades ago.

I'd be interested in other people's "ultimate" programme.

I am of the same opinion as you Steve, only I love the 68/69 Hull City programmes for cover and content. This also had a big influence on me starting to collect football programmes. I also loved the small Arsenal, Chelsea and West Ham United efforts, with a lot of information inside.

Slightly a side observation but i think post war programme cover awards for design for me are Grimsby Town 1946-7 & 1947-8 with the trawer bring in the fish all with the opposing teams names on into the goals and 1948-9 season Hull City homes were magnificent in full colour in such austere times.

I always thought the Manchester United homes postwar were decent value with informative chat on all the club's teams as well as from 1947-8 onwards the action photo on the cover as against some banal advert for Raincoats[Man City] for years. It really is not biased-honest Laughing Wave

And no adverts. I doubt the clubs even then would have turned down that revenue atream so it must have been a deliberate decision.
Very laudable (not that I mind adverts as long as they're for local businesses like fishmongers, cafes and the like!).

It's funny how some clubs - Hull, West Brom, the 3 you mentioned, Everton etc - have, down the years, taken pride in what they issue and were prepared to put the time, effort and expense in whilst others (including, sadly, Derby pre-1971) seemed to issue only because it was a League rule to do so.

With you on the Grimsby one, Leslie. Very unique design.
I did really like the United home issue for 74/75 but, back then, when I used to send my 30p postal order to various clubs (envelope always addressed to "The Secretary" cos that's what the BPCC advised us to do) for a copy of their programme, I was disappointed never to receive a reply from Old Trafford. About the only club who never did.
I know they're loaded now but I do wonder what they did with that postal order!

Personal choice would be the Killie White issues from Kilmarnock in late 1940s.

Back then United as did City handed over all their programme sales to Eddie Philips of the Manchester Programme Shop fame, his son in later years appeared on this site more than once as he resurected that business some time ago. I cannot pass any comment but he was known old Eddie to be somewhat " of a character" and best leave it at that. Also, so as not to blacken Eddie's name further, if by then United were then doing the programmes themselves then it is a fair acessment to state they were robbin bastards then as they are now Laughing

One of those is up on eBay at present. They do look quite good.

While ignoring the chequered past of QPR, and not quite knowing what the requirements are for picking the best programmes, as to covers, I would put forward Torquay's late 1950s sets. Different pictures of the English Riviera on each programme.

My personal favourite, Bohemians from 39-40 to the late 40s. Fine looking programme absolutely packed with information, including photos.

For me there are two elements which can be considered separately or together when it comes to 'best' programme ever. being content and cover. Of course it is subjective and makes our choices different and. interesting What I love is covers, especially multi coloured. I rate Hull 46/7 as League and Banbury Spencer as non-league ,Amongst other interests I have been collecting non-league covers from after the war to say late 50's as there a such variety in the artwork!
