Have had a request from a friend who's asking if anyone knows of Bishop Auckland played at Pompey at all during the 1960s. I assume it would have to be a friendly were that the case, although the logiiitcs of it don't make sense. I'm aware there was an FACY match in 2004 so it's not that. |

Many of the northern amateur teams went down south prior to the Amateur Cup Final and often played friendlies on the Friday night against London area times - maybe this could explain Bishop Auckland being down there - but doesn't help with the Pompey query! |

The game that you referred to in 2004 was played on 27/4/2004. It was not an F A Youth Cup game, but an English Schools F A Final between Portsmouth U15 and Bishop Auckland U15. Pompey won 1-0. A programme exists for this game.
As Pete has previously mentioned, I also can see no such fixture in my list of first team friendlies. Pompey only had a Reserve team up to 1965, and I am not aware of any such friendly at this level either.
Why does your friend think such a game took place, and are they able to provide any more information?
Happy to investigate further if more info comes to light. |

It's from someone who thinks he remembers going to see Pompey play, having been taken there by his dad as a youngster when they lived in Waterlooville. He also thinks that Bishop Auckland were the opposition because of their strange name, and it resonated with him being a catholic.
Weird, I know. |

Might it be Bishop's Waltham as it's only a few miles from Portsmouth? _________________ For a daily feed of football nostalgia please click on the link to view my Twitter page on your PC - https://twitter.com/MemorabiliaMal |

Would they have a football team who might have played a local cup final there? |

Because of a lack of an underground cellar in my village local we don't have draught real ale, but our accommodating landlord always has a decent variety of decent ales in bottles. Am currently enjoying Bishop's Finger, and at 5.4% it's a reasonable tipple.
Just as an aside on ale, I ordered 16 Belgian beers online from a company called Beerwulf, and these worked out at just over £2 per bottle with free postage. Eight of them are 8% or above, and two of them are 11%. With a nice malt whisky chaser am set for a few nice nights in the coming week or so. |
