Having won the first leg 4-1, the return leg would be a breeze, yes?
Oh dear....
In those pre-internet and wall-to-wall coverage of European ties days, we had to rely on Radio 2......I remember listening to this game at my Granny's house, borrowing her transistor radio and taking it out into the garden shed for some peace and quiet.
40 years ago to the day.......that is scary.

7th November 1964
A momentous day for me - my first ever CPFC away match - and the first ever programmes I bought to kick off my collecting habit (2 blokes were selling them from boxes on the train back home).
Football League, Division 2.
Att: 20,161
Southampton 0 Crystal Palace 1 (Burridge)

Whatever happened to these kind of tournaments?
|
Living in London at the time, I used to go to these every year around the late seventies and early eighties. They were a big deal at the time and most teams involved played their best players. I'm sure Keegan played whilst he was England captain. I can't imagine the teams of today letting their superstars crash around on a wooden floor for the night.
I can recall some "lively" nights around Wembley Arena with fans from the likes of Spurs, Chelsea, West Ham and Millwall all in the same place at the same time in a dangerous era.
I think the tournaments died in the mid eighties, but tried a doomed comeback in the nineties? Soccer sixes and Masters football tried to "fill the gap" I suppose, but always had a testimonial feel about it. The 5 a sides were important to the clubs, players and fans alike.
Thanks for stirring up some forgotten memories. |

Something a little different - 52 years ago today, the Fabs played the Granada in East Ham.
The tour programme was generic and not specific to each night - but the scribbles inside my copy make it obvious that "Jenny and Sue" were at this particular show...and both obviously went to look at Paul
Wish they'd left the ticket stub inside!

49 years ago today.
The negative? United won 5-0.
The positive? It was at least an improvement on the 8-0 defeat at Leeds a couple of weeks earlier....

61 years ago today.
Surprisingly sparse attendance of 16,652 to watch the East Midlands derby.
This 0-3 defeat for the Rams would begin a sequence whereby they would win just 2 of their next 25 league games - and end up in Division Three (North).
