And probably no toilet facility on the coach either!

I did the Aberdeen to London overnight coach trip back in 1980. No toilet on that coach either. One stop in Brechin and that was your lot. Very "awkward" indeed.

I threw the return ticket down the drain at Euston when the coach eventually arrived. Wasn't going through that again!

I'm not a fan of coach travel. Can't see why it would take that long in 1975. Surely straight up the A1 in those days I would guess. Mind you it takes forever now with the 50 mph on the M1 for endless miles.

I love this flyer, given out inside Palace's 1946 Christmas programmes to drum up interest in a trip to Newcastle for the FA Cup 3rd Round in January.

Starting from Kings' Cross at 11.30 pm on Friday night, and arriving back there at 6.05 a.m. on the Sunday, this was a round trip of 30 hrs 35 mins for a 90-minute football match. The cost was 50/- (£2.50). It also allowed for about 8 hours in Newcastle before the game, and about 6 hours in town after the game. If travellers had any money left (and this was only a year after WW2 and rationing was heavily in place) I can only dream about the number of Brown Ales that would have slipped down various necks!

In retribution for Palace's famous win there in 1907, Newcastle won this game 6-2.

Seems expensive for that time. And what the hell would you do in Newcastle 6.30 am on a Saturday morning in 1946 ? No Eldon square shopping centre in those days. I suppose after the horrors of WW11 a trip to Newcastle wouldn't seem so harsh, but still, must have been a cold and desperate experience in those rationing days .

If it had been 10 years earlier they could have called in and seen my only ever television hero, Jack Ford from When the Boat Comes in. Unfortunately, he was killed in the Spanish Civil war so he wouldn't have been around post war.

Without a doubt, When the Boat Come sin is my favourite tv drama series of all time, bar none.

I can't get that theme tune out of my head now!

PS - sent you a Facebook message, John.
Soon as you remind me, I'll do what needs to be done..
