After receiving a benefit whilst at Manchester United in 1912, Billy returned to City in 1921 and as the curtains came down on his career as he was still playing at 50 at new Benefit was arranged.

Nice item! I notice there is a picture of Billy with all his caps plus some trophies. Has the Meredith collection survived and if so, what happened to it?

I DOUBT IT VERY MUCH.

2-3 years back one of his Welsh Caps and his original players Union Badge were sold at auction by Sporting Memory's and the vendor was a relation of his, so perhaps it all got split up within his family?.
The cap did not sell first time round but the cloth badge did and then the cap went the second time it was offered and for a very good price well over estimate, no doubt Robert can confirm it all at some point.

I also think over many years some of his other items Cap wise have emerged at various auctions.

Nice items Leslie. The write up, alongside the the cloth badge, is a very interesting read. Thanks.

Oh well!!

Still, it's a good read and adds to something which, on the face of it, is just a cloth badge. Adding the 'story' adds a lot more to it. Thumbs Up

Facts are Facts no matter who researched them surely and to say it is just a cloth badge is to say George Best-Denis Law-Bobby Charlton were "just 3 footballers" Laughing
Without that Iconic badge and more for what it stood for then, we would not all be so disgusted at the madness of today's football as regards the financial lunacy that has engulfed the entire World.

Who could have thought that Meredith and all the others who campaigned that players should get paid in the Summer for starters and not be left to fend for themselves for 3-4 months back then and to have a living wage during the season could comprehend what has happened today. Get My Coat
