Hello,

As the title says I'm not a real collector of programmes but I've recently inherited a box of things whch contains an absolutely mint copy of West Ham v. Blackburn in the 1940 Cup Final. My question is basically "What the hell do I do with it?"

How should I store it? Any tips to keep it in good condition. I'm actually quite nervous around it.

I'm undecided as whether to sell or not. At the moment I'm thinking it would make a good birth gift for my son who will be born in September. Would this be wise? I presume the price will keep rising with age - does the future look good for items like this or should I sell while the price is good?

Cheers for any tips.

If it is a genuine programme and not a reprint, quality items like this programme will always sell, especially if it is free from defects.

As to whether it will appreciate further over time depends on the future market. There are not many new collectors but there will always be a market for this programme.

If you do not need the money I would keep it in the family. If you need the cash then auction should realise the best price - try Sportingold, Sporting Memorys or Football Sports Auctions for advice on selling, costs etc. They all have a website with contact details.

What other programmes are in the box?

If it's genuine then expect around £300 at auction or put it on ebay for £400 buy it now. Graham Budd's auction in London sold one in good condition last month for £320 which is the most up to date price for it

Nothing suggests it's a reprint but to be honest I don't know what I'm looking for. I've been through it, no tears, missing pages or writing and it is held together well... just a fold down the centre.

In this box was just this programme and a 1949/50 Blackburn v Plymouth. Plus some very old looking stamp collections and photos. There are boxes on boxes of programmes that are mine but I need to go back with a ladder to access them in the attic. What I know of my Grandfathers football watching, they will be Blackburn Rovers homes from 1940s? to present and Portsmouth homes from early 50's as he went while stationed close by in the RAF. Anything particular I should look out for?

If you have a Blackburn v West Ham 22nd April 1950 it sells for around £2000

The Cup Final Programme looks genuine to me. Different paper used for the pages seem to suggest this. A Nice find.

The picture will be difficult to decipher unless there are more markings on it somewhere?

The badge on the shirts looks like a "D" with some emblem - a flower? - to the left. With the name, ??? Wilder, on the right. A bit of detective work needed to find out if it's a local club side from the late 1800's/early 1900's or an established known league club side.

I've done a few minutes Googling local teams it could be...

Apparently it's a photo of the Blackburn Olympic FA Cup Winning team of 1883. Are these cabinet portraits worth any real value?

Another great find if it is. These photo cards definitely have a value. It's a a shame it's damaged, but find another! I'm sure a few of the Blackburn collectors on here can say what it could be worth at an auction.

Also, the 1940's Blackburn programmes and 1950's Pompey programmes, there will be many on here who could help value these too. Also if you're looking to sell them on.

Didn't think it would be too long before PM sent or simliar would appear following the disclosure that "they will be Blackburn Rovers homes from 1940s". Laughing

It conjures up all manner of expectations of what might be there.

I expect a PM sent message from the Portsmouth lads shortly.

That's a fantastic item despite the damage.

I can't imagine there being many of these around.

Definitely one for auction if you decide to sell.

if you find a 1948-49 Blackburn v Plymouth rather than 1949-50 there are few Rovers and Plymouth collectors who would be very interested.

I would be interested in any Blackburn 1945-46 or earlier

The reality of this is that you need to draw breath and try to work out what is worth what as you appear to have other programmes and items based on your first post

The theme appears to be Blackburn Rovers.
Please correct me if i am wrong

So what else do you have?
You might have half a dozen or so programmes from the same season of which 5 might be worth nowt and one might be worth a serious amount of money
A few on this forum will help you whilst a few others might start dabbling in Blackburn Rovers programmes and give you an offer which sounds generous but in reality is a pisstake

So my advice is that on the presumption there is no hurry to make an instant decision or cash them in then take a step back

First of all you need to protect them and value them
The most expensive way forward is to store the quality items in an acid free surrounding.
These sorts of things can be viewed at Secol who sell them
That said they don't sell odd bits and are expensive. However you have some quite serious items already with most to investigate

If it was me and i had your lack of knowledge i would contact the National Football Museum in Manchester
Tell them you have inherited some items including the Blackburn Olympic card and ask for preservation advise
That team takes you back to the cradle of football so they will be interested and helpful

For the programmes i would get some card backed board from Paperchase or similar and put them in a see through perspex sandwich bag
Do not use anything that will sweat and stick to the print and take it off.

If you want any further help feel free to drop me a pm

The people that are already talking to you on this thread ie blueshearer(obviously a Blackburn interest so he probably has an erection now) and cossie are two of the good guys and will help
Be very careful of some of the others who will be happy to take your trousers down if you give them a a chance

As i say pm me if you need any private advise

After a day of sorting through boxes of photos and papers it's starting to get pretty exciting in our house. The Blackburn Olympic photo is straight from the studio in Blackpool it was taken and/or developed at. Add that to the fact that I'm seeing other photos of a chap that looks very similar to one in the team pic - I'm starting to think I have an FA Cup winning relative! If an 1883 winners medal, programme, or some sort of players programme or certificate turns up I'm going to cry...

In other news I've turned up a pair of Boer War medals (currently selling for around £350 on eBay). Close by were two more photo cards (similar to the Olympic one) of my great great grandfather and his pals out in South Africa and another of him back home with medals being worn. Also two more identical medal straps exacxtly the same suggesting there are two more medals around somewhere. Haven't had chance to look into the page full of Nazi Germany stamps yet... oh and there are the footy programmes still to go and pick up.

S*** like this doesn't happen to me!

I'm thinking right now that an small investment to get things professionally hung, cleaned, restored, framed (whichever) might be well worth it for the my own great great grandkids sake.

Draw breath and stand back but you are in the valuable era

Any single card items pre this will put you on a serious cruise

I'd get rid of the stuff if you have no interest as a collector. I wouldn't start thinking of framing etc. Why the stress and hassle when you can have the money in the bank. Whilst good items are always sought after, it is generally agreed that prices in general are falling . There does not seem a younger generation of collectors coming along. And who knows what modern technology will produce in years to come ? Perfect copies of old items that are impossible to tell apart from originals ? Who can say ? Get in touch with a top sports auctioneer and get rid of them.
You'll be happy, auctioneer will be happy and collectors will be happy.
Shame about the Nazi stuff, our expert is banned at the moment Razz (some would say, not me )

Cheers Ray

Would've got very "excited" a year or so ago but have managed to get all Rovers homes since the war and the odd one before. I now look out for other Rovers fans who are trying to complete their collection. I have provided Grameka with some advice on which programmes to look out for which are the rarer ones so he doesn't get screwed

i.e 1946-47 Sunderland (the rarest of all), Liverpool, Man U, Everton, Everton (Lancs Cup), Arsenal. 1947-48 Man U, Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea. 1948-49 Plymouth, Brentford +. 1949-50 West Ham, Spurs, Leeds +. 1950-51 Southampton, Luton, Falkirk (friendly) and so on.

Clive may want to add to this list.

If by any chance he came across the lovely item v Man U that you sent a link to I would happily pay for the cruise.

Here's a bit of relatively modern Rovers tat on Ebay at the moment

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1916.....1436.l2649

There's another bit of even more recent tat coming up for auction this week!

It gives us Rovers fans a bit of a laugh that at least our programmes are so desirable even though its cost us a bloody fortune to collect them.

BOOST!! Ha Ha!
