I read somewhere quite recently that he had moved out to America and was now living a somewhat reclusive life in a caravan park.

Great player.........

One of a few players who played for pompey & southampton.

Former Pompey striker Ron Davies has died at the age of 70 – a day short of his 71st birthday.

After starting his career at Chester, Davies had spells at Luton and Norwich before a prolific career at Southampton, where he scored 153 goals in seven years.

The Welsh international then joined Pompey in April 1973 for a fee of £38,000 – scoring 21 goals in 69 games.

Davies netted 16 times in his first full season at Fratton Park, despite playing in a struggling second division side under John Mortimore.

The following campaign, he struck five goals before Mortimore was sacked and replaced by Ian St John.

Davies was then sold to Manchester United – at that time a second division club – with George Graham arriving in part exchange.

He eventually emigrated to USA where he stayed for his retirement.

RIP Ron

A superb player, one of the finest headers of a ball we will ever see.

Here's a lovely photo of him.

Great picture, Pete.

3 more on the front of memorabilia in this website post I did in 2012 on fitness / sports science in the game today.

I mentioned Ron in the post because I had heard how he was struggling badly with bad hips and knees in recent times.

Would the sort of methods used today have prevented such difficulties / suffering for players like Ron?

The damage done to pro sportsmen can be lost with their retirements - Jimmy Connors said yesterday on TS that he has had 3 hip replacements!

RIP to a super player;
