Sounds like your snipe tool failed. I use Hammersnipe and have never had a problem.

I always use goofbay and have never had a problem, this has made me wonder whether to use another sniper tool now

i have only used a sniper (goofbay) on 2 occassions and they worked fine. However the alternative is not always so reliable either. Several weeks ago I was poised for a ticket in which I was was well interested. Current bid was below my intended bid so I planned to bid with a few seconds to go....... only to reach that time and found my internet connection had dropped due to a signal issue.

Then a few weeks later I was poised for a programme. No fears of signal issues as I was at a different location this time with more reliable internet. Watching the clock tick down on eBay, press confirm bid with seconds to go.........only to come up with user login screen. Unbeknown to me eBay had decided to log me out while I was waiting. By the time I logged in again the auction was finished and winning bid was well below what I was prepared to bid.

I too am a Hammersnipe fan, 3 free bids a week, usually enough for me. Had it for years and never once a problem. You can still bid normally if you feel you need to test the waters, but that might be self-defeating and encourage the bidding war which we all want to avoid, so as to hopefully get the item at the lowest price!

Why not just bid your amount with a few days to go? Confused

Look at it this way.

A programme is currently sitting at £50, you’re prepared to pay £100.

With 2 days to go, you bid £100 and outbid the current bidder and the price sits at £60. That gives the other bidder time to weigh up their options and bid again, pushing the price up closer to your max bid. You may still end up winning but paying £90.

If you snipe it with seconds to go, there is no time to comeback and you get it for £60.

OK, very simplistic and there’s lots of variable’s but that’s the theory of using these snipe tools

.....and that's all it is Wullie, a theory. If the people bidding against you are on snipe or whatever you call it the highest bid will still win. I do as Senior says and leave a bid withing the last 24 hours, as I only look at programmes with that amount of time to go anyway. Never bid at the last minute, I have a price I'm prepared to pay, and if it wins great, if not, I'll pick it up cheaper next time around with the winning bidder of the last one out of the way.

Can't believe people are still using bid snipers, most items close with 1 bid, if that Smile

That's what I do when I buy stuff and haven't got the Buy It Now option.

Works a treat Laughing

Not the stuff I use the sniper on (I don't use it for all items I bid on, particularly low value stuff)

Indeed it does.

I don't use any sniper tool, just a very bad memory, which has resulted in many a programme being missed.

And Yes, I've been asked to log in with seconds to go, and yes my internet has gone down at the wrong time, and yes that can be frustrating and then you wonder why I didn't just bid earlier.

Must be all the excitement! Smile

What I have never understood is people who make a number of bids on the same item. Multiple bids are suspicious, especially on high value items. Why bid £9.99 to start, followed by £300 5 days later...etc etc

You only need to make one bid, whether you choose to bid early or late.

Could just be peoples way of remembering to bid... if you have the eBay app on your mobile you can get notifications on being outbid etc, I sometimes put a low bid in just incase something else comes up that I would rather spend my money on. If something else crops up I only have a low bid to worry about, if not I can bid higher on a later date.

Maybe people also bid low straight away to 'secure' the item, if the seller gets an early bid will they finish the auction early? I guess not...

As previously stated - personal preference.

funny enough i rarely use it. Only i was going out and was not sure what time i'd be back so used a snipe. As it turned out i was back in plenty of time, sat back to watch my winning bid, and nothing happened Crying or Very sad .
As i say, i'll never use it again, lesson learnt.

Maybe it doesn't work if you're logged in?
