Post subject: List of all games at the new Wembley
Reply with quote

Hi all.
Listening to the Palace v Watford play-off game, I think I heard the commentator say that this was the 129th football match at the new Wembley. I just had to look into it. Ive got 121 atm:

32 England homes
3 England U21 homes
7 FAC Finals
12 FAC Semis
6 LC Finals
7 Championship play-offs
6 1st Div play-offs
6 2nd Div play-offs
5 Community Shield
2 CL Finals
6 Conference play-offs
6 Johnstones paint finals
7 Vase Finals
7 FA Trophy Finals
9 Olympic football games

Can anyone confirm it is 129 and if so, fill in the missing 8 games.
Thanks
Peter

There were 4 games in the Wembley Cup in 2009 featuring, Tottenham, Celtic, Barcelona and Al-Ahly.

There was also a behind closed doors game (although that probably doesn't count) and there was a charity match between a Geoff Thomas Foundation Charity XI and the Wembley Sponsors Allstars on 17 March 2007.

Now you mention the Wembley Cup i've got a feeling that there was one either the year before or after that too, which would account for the other four missing games?

I had a feeling there might have been another but I have checked on t'internet and 2009 was the only one.

They had proposed to hold another in 2010 but it didn't happen.

If those other 2 games I mentioned are included, and the figure of 129 is correct, we need to find 2 more.

There were programmes issued for the following matches at New Wembley

Umbro Fives (Five-a-side) competition in 2007-2011 which is played on the wembley pitch
Corinthian Casuals v AFC Wimbledon Programme (2008) £5 programme
England Schools Internationals (£5 programme) for Scotland (2007) and France (2008)
England v Belgium U15s (?) £2 programme
Soccer Aid match (2007) £5 programme

Dont know if these are included in the 129 though but they are the more obscure matches played at the ground

So the missing 8 games could be

the 4 Wembley Cup matches
Corinthian Casuals v AFC Wimbledon
the 2 schools internationals, and
the England Belgium game

The Soccer Aid match, the charity match and the behind closed doors game were probably not included, nor would the 5-a-sides.

Back over to you redhel.

Brilliant, thanks so far to you all. Makes it interesting now. As I say, I can’t say for certain that 129 is the number I’m looking for. If you look on Wembley Stadiums home page at ‘past events’, it lists everything that has gone on there since 6.2.2008 BUT it doesn’t mention the 4 games in the Wembley Cup in 2009 which I now can definitely add to the list. The 1st game at the stadium was on 24.3.2007 (official game as there were one or two ‘kick abouts’ on the pitch which I won’t count) So that leaves almost a year not listed on the Wembley site.
The Soccer Aid game is on there, which I had missed. England played the rest of the World in front of 42 000 fans so that goes on my list.
The Wimbledon v Corintian Casuals goes on the list. (Looking for a score and attendance for that one)
One of the ‘kick abouts’ I mention was in fact the Geoff Thomas Charity match on 16.3.2007, which on further research, states it was ‘the 1st game at Wembley’, so Im wondering if that should be counted. I presume it was open to the public and some sort of programme was probably produced?
So that makes my 121 plus 7 above
I’ll look into the schools games and the U15s game and the five a sides which would take it over the 129 but if programmes were issued, I presume they should be added.
Obviously, still looking for anything else that I can add or take off my list but thanks again for the efforts so far.
Peter

The score was 8-1 to Wimbledon but I don't know the attendance.
