After I really bad few months, missing out on all sorts of nice items at auction, I finally got hold of something decent. In fact , probably beats anything I missed out on. The others will no doubt turn up again, but I don't think this will. Postcard 1884/85 ( I'm told, but could be 83/84) of Sunderland FC before the famous red and white stripes. It's probably the second oldest known photo, one of the earliest artefacts to exist. It's image has been used in many football history books. I'm baffled why this didn't go for more when a framed 1973 FA Cup programme and ticket went for double what this card cost. I'm really pleased to pick up these museum pieces ( something similar is on its way to me ) for a decent price, whilst other collectors don't seem interested.

Fair play, that is a gorgeous item Wullie.

I collect similar photos & real-photo postcards for Newport County, and like you I'm often staggered that the more common, modern stuff goes for more.
Not that I'm complaining!

I even adore the little creases, nicks & imperfections on these pre war items, it always makes them seem much more 'real' if they look as if they've lived a life.

Another one picked up today. Season 1890/91. The season Sunderland replaced Stoke City in the League, therefore becoming the newest Member of the football league after the original 12.

Fantastic, museum quality stuff. And so incredibly old Sunderland were actually quite good at the time! Wink

How large is the second one? I've the same kind picture from another pre-1900 season and wondering if they were issued every year?

looks like it refers to Sunderland as Team rather than Club? Have you seen that before because i don't think i have in any 'official' way?

would be interesting to see that formation today...

The second one is not actually a postcard, just a err card Very Happy
The guy selling them must have a hell of a collection, with connections to the club historians because all of the stuff he sells has appeared in books. He is probably well known but as I'm not based UP NORTH , I don't really know people nowadays. I am careful not to ask to many questions about collections people are selling. Some are fine but others get a bit funny about it... Confused

Well Done Wullie!

The right place at the right time-collectors dream.

If anything like this ever shows up for Newton Heath or early MUFC it's another re-mortgage!

Leslie Millman

Thumbs Up

Leslie, did you get you hands on the 1963/63 Sunderland v Manchester United FA Cup ticket stubs recently listed on Ebay ? I know you were after one a few years ago. Funny two turning up like that, just like waiting for a bus. I'm not sure why the are so rare as it was an all ticket crowd of about 50,000 but they say the unofficial crowd was near 80,000 when the gates broke open.

This is a great find. Harry Martin, a ever present in the Championship winning team of 1913 and FA Cup finalist. Made over 200 appearances for Sunderland and won an England cap. The signature is wonderful .

Awesome photo of the old Roker Park stand in the background.
