I was watching an auction today at morphets of harrogate and 9 leeds united home programmes 2 late 1944 and 7 1945 fetched £1200 without the commisson. Shocked do leeds united wartime programmes always fetch this sort of money or was it just 2 people with deep pockets were chasing the programmes?
in the same auction 6 bradford pa progs went for £400 and 6 middlesbo progs went for £380! a nice result for the person who put them in the auction

I was also watching the same auction. The guide price for these programmes was £100 - £150 which I thought was way too low. As it was not a sporting auction I thought I might be able to pick them up for myself at a great price - but alas the bidding went mad !

The price seemed over the top but I guess if you only wanted 1 or 2 for a collection then flog the others it might not work out too bad. Looked like a bidding war between two interested parties as you say. All but one of the programmes was in very good condition for the age. I wouldn't expect a group like that to come up too often.

At an auction a couple of years ago I noted two people go head to head for the following:

HAARLEM v LEEDS 1956/57 – £490

DE ZWALUWEN v LEEDS 1956/57 – £590

BRADFORD C v LEEDS W. RIDING SENIOR CUP FINAL 1957/58 - £200

I wouldn't be surprised if it was the same two people bidding today. It’s definitely big money for the more desirable Leeds programmes and if you get two people with money going against each other, then the seller is a happy person.

With commission they seem a bit over priced , doubt very much a dealer would buy these as no profit would be made. As said, they don't turn up that often and too see them all listed in an auction in one go , it is easy to get carried away. I'd probably do the same for a Sunderland collection but would kick myself after for paying average £133 per programme plus commisson. Ouch!

£133 as an average price is less than a main dealer would sell these for, in the latest catalogue 44-45 and 45-46 range from £150-£200 most are £200.

If I had won these for the hammer price, and even with commission would have been happy with the price.... alas I don't have £1200 spare to spend on programmes...... I will re-phrase I couldn't hide spending that much money from the misses!!!

I would place a few quid on the buyer being a dealer.....

I'm sure you're right about a dealer. Big difference between forking out £1,200+ on something to sell on and spending it on something to sit on your shelf - however good the "long term investment" story is ![/quote]

the hammer price according to the auctioneers was £1100, so approx £1300 inclluding commission for 9 programmes which will sell for a minimum of £200 each sounds good business to me and there were 5 x 44/5 issues which he will sell at £250 a time

A dealers price maybe £200/£250 but i'd doubt he'll sell. I'd much rather wait and buy on Ebay for less.
