I'm sat here contemplating another point lost to a so called big team who score in the last 5 minutes of the game and wondering why all the refereeing decisions go for the 'big' teams and against those who come from the lower end of the division! - moan over now to the question.
Have you considered what will become of your own painstakingly put together collection when you are gone?
For the past 10, 20 or 30 years you have sort out and purchased individual items to amass the collection you have. But what will become of your precious collection in the years to come as you reach pensionable age? Will it be handed down to your children or grandchildren. What if you pass on without leaving it to someone - will your wife or partner sell it off at a car boot sale.
From my own point of view I have two young sons who I hope to pass it on to - god knows how I will split it between them. And fortunately my wife knows my collection has a value so it won't end up down the local charity shop or car boot.
What about you? Ever given it a thought?
One final point - if you are looking to hand it down in the family do it early enough to ensure your recipient does not have to pay inheritance tax on the value of it. Wouldn't want the government to get there hands on some of it would you.

We don't have kids and unlikely to do so. Her indoors knows the
collection has value so if I pop my clogs first it wont be heading for a car boot!
The most likely outcome is that, unless my bank balance looks healthy (!) then the collection - or part of it - may be sold to supplement our pension when that time comes (two or three decades away yet).
It' s just as much an investment to me as well as a hobby. _________________ https://www.flickr.com/photos/footballprogrammes/albums |

Good question to answer because apart from the value of the collection sometimes its more about somebodys lifetime acheivement with hours upon hours which have gone into compiling and organising everything etc.
Trouble is passing it down to two kids the collection would have to be split really so there would be no problems or the interest just might not be there, In which case would be better off sold at retirement age anyway....but dont think I could ever do it! |

Inheritance tax won't come into it - as far as I'm concerned it will just be given to my son, the taxman will never know anything about it. It's not like it's a traceable asset like a house. |

I've just sold mine.....for the 3rd time!
HAd probably the best ever Cardiff collection and sold it 1995, then started again, got bored and sold that too. Started again about 5 years ago but haven't got the motivation so sold it 3 weeks ago. Won't collect again. I kept my reserve collection , which is about a thousand items and am now selling that via Ebay. Will spend the money on some new clothes. I know a few collectors who are ready to sell up, especially now as prices are falling and fewer new entrants to the hobby.
No regrets at the moment but if I win the lottery on Saturday I'll be round my friends house offering him something for his complete post war collection! |

No I was missing the Portsmouth Friendly.
Matt, my mate has a complete post war collection of Homes (actually I know 2 people who have this and are looking to sell).
I did send you an email about the 20 or so you needed that i had, but sadly they've gone now. |

I still need 51 homes to complete my Newport collection, but have recently added the elusive Chelsea 45/6 home, so appear to have broken the back of it.
Will use to supplement my pension in years to come. Still get a really great feeling when I track something down that I don't have, although to be fair it doesn't happen as frequently as I would like.
Keep smiling and good luck

Hi John, I managed to purchase the Chelsea home for a bottle of Brandy! from an old chap that lives within spitting distance of my house, the strange bit is that I've known him for 10 years and didn't realise that he was a Chelsea fan as a kid. My Mrs has tried to add to my moral dilemma by informing me that I should come clean and let him now the value! whilst I try to be as honest as possible, I declined.
Hi Matt, my collection goes back to the war, I've got a handful of early 30's progarmmes, but at £200 a pop I thought that I needed to reign in the urge to go any further back.
Keep smiling |

Tis a good question.
I'm a collector of rugby programmes and my club is now sadly defunct, so my collection is now an historical and social record.
Money has never come into it, it has been built up over the years from match attendences, donations and in later years ebay bids.
I wouldn't want the collection splitting it but maintaining as a whole and made available to researchers etc. To that end I have considered donating it to either the local archive service - who hold the official club archive which contains some programmes or to the RFU Museum.
Either way I want it to be kept together and accessible, hopefully with some public display from time to time.
Hopefully I have many more years to live before I have to make the decision! |
