I wanted England to do well in the World Cup ,but I wasnt as devastated as if Manchester United lost a major final etc.Is this wrong?I also like the other British nations to do well when they participate in competitions, but we know more or less know they arent going to win it.England are definitely in that category, and I cant feel too disappointed.
However I support my Club first ,country second, and I would bet many other fans feel the same way.I was fortunate to be around when England
won the World Cup in 1966,and as a boy in 1958 seeing Wales reach the quarter finals in the Sweden based World Cup.
The old saying is that patriotism is the last resort of a scoundrel...
Does any agree ,and do you also want your club to do better than your Country? Surprised

Actually I'm the other way around; England first, club second. Not sure why but there you go. And, like you, if Wales or Scotland are playing someone other than England I always cheer for them. Most English will cheer for the other home nations. I've never met any English who would cheer against Scotland or Wales - let alone wear the oppositions shirt!

You need to get out more!

I'm a country before club person, although in reality the two very rarely clash so there's no need to choose.

I wasn't in Scotland this year but in 2006 there were plenty of Scots who bought Paraguay and Trinidad shirts for when they played England. If Scotland were playing, say, Bulgaria can you honestly imagine English fans buying and wearing Bulgarian shirts??? Not in a million years.[/quote]

I think the number of fans wasting money on Paraguay shirts was very few indeed, probably about as few as England fans buying Bulgaria shirts.

However the popularity of the T&T shirt was solely down to Jason SCOTLAND......I'm sure you can see why they may have been popular.

True. I think part of it is that for Scots the rivalry with the English is a big thing, whereas it's really not the case south of the border, and never really has been, in the days of the Home Internationals the English barely watched them on TV let alone bought tickets. The English see their biggest rivals as Italy, Argentina and that lot from yesterday

I am club before country.
Why would anyone want to spend money supporting a bunch of twats like the ones that were so pathetic yesterday.
Still want my country to do well but accept that it isn't going to happen.
As for supporting Scotland or Wales. NO CHANCE. But I would never be so sad to go and buy a shirt from the team they were playing.

Roll on August and real football.

I'm changing from England to Brazil. Buying my shirt tomorrow. I just wish now that I hadn't had the Three Lions tattoo put on my forehead last week.

I want my Club Newport County to do well primarily, but when it comes to going to games Wales always comes first home and away.

Any expection of Wales doing well has long since been driven away by Toshack !!!

I would always put Leicester City before England as I feel I have more in common with my local team as opposed to the national team. The new national stadium, should have been built in the Midlands (This has nothing to do with the fact I live there) to give more people to go and watch the national team. Although I did feel I had more affinity with the national team when Wembley was being rebuilt and England played matches around the country, which I am afraid to say will never happen again.

Another club before country. I see such good players week in and week out and players who by and large are trying hard to win....then i watch the abject rubbish, poor football and couldn't give a damn approach of the england team. Although I don't excuse it at club level, I can understand that premiership players are mainly at it for the money. There are so few locals making the premiership grade these days and why would someone from Ivory Coast or France or Spain or Germany feel passionately about a club/town in England. Thus just like all of us they work for their employer and loyalty/commitment only goes so far. However I cannot understand nor tolerate the same at international level. Everybody in that team is there to fight for their country, their heritage, their nation. There is no excuse for not giving 100%. Sadly these players take their premiership prima donna attitude to the england camp and have lost all connection with the fan. I do feel passionately about my contry but sadly can't abide some of the morons who now wear the shirt.

I don't want anyone to think that I am excusing the players' attitudes when I say that I will continue to support England. The ambivalent, over-paid, 'couldn't care less' attitude displayed by so many of them is inexcusable. The images yesterday of A. Cole and King laughing and joking as they got off the plane in Joburg really sums it up. Perhaps we need a player's passion and heart to be taken into account more in the selection process.
Also, whoever said that England games should not be played at Wembley - you are spot on. England games should be alternated between the biggest stadia all over the country e.g. Arsenal, Chelsea, Utd, Villa, Liverpool, Newcastle, Sunderland etc all hosting, anywhere 30,000+ really). it would vastly improve atmosphere, bring the team to the fans and, above all, wouldn't be the financial drain that the monstrosity of Wembley has become.

Country before club everytime for me, always has been and always will be.

I cant turn my back on my country but I can, and have, turned my back on 'my club' twice.

I was born an England fan but I chose to be a Forest fan, then chose to be a Hucknall fan, then chose to be a Shepshed fan. Just the same way everyone of you chose your club. You were not born a xxxxx fan as there were many other clubs you could have supported in the area in which you live. Your choice of club also has nothing to do with family history, my dad was a communist, I am a Nationalist my grandad was soldier, I am a civil servant so the theory that you support the club your dad/grandad/uncle supported is a ridiculas one. There is a difference in the National team though, you are born English (or Scottish or Welsh if you are unlucky) and you cannot support another Nation... That is the Law unless you are a scandinavian wannabe hooligan Wink

The problem with this current crop of England players is that they have forgot the fact they are playing for everyone in the country and do not appear to have any national pride. How the manager changes that is a difficult one, but I assure you that if someone like Stuart Pearce was in charge he would not have a bunch a players that didnt give a shit.

Didnt West Brom's wage bill increase by 50 in between 2006 and 2008?

I wonder how much it will go up following their promotion?

How much is too much in terms of players wages?

If the top player at West Brom is on £20k per week (for example) then isnt it right that the top player at Chelsea is on £200K per week?

He "allegedly" said he doesnt like England or the English people, obviously if he said that I would never want him to play for England again despite being our only world class player although I doubt even he would be stupid enough to put that on face book.

Rooney is a born and bred scouser, do you think he likes Manchester or the people of Manchester or do you think he is there for the cash? Replace Rooney for any player not born in Manchester and ask yourself the same question, do they like Manchester and the people of Manchester?

If Albion are to win a trophy they will have to pay more in salaries, once they win something their players will demand more money, just like every other club's. In 2009 when they were relegated (for the 3rd time in 7 years) they had a number of players on 20K a week. Isn't that overpaid? I could play in the Premiership and get a team relegated for much les than that. Wink
