Hereford v Gillingham - looking for the date/year

Recently met up with an old mate I used to head down to England with in the 80s to take in random games.
We both recall being at Edgar Street for a night game against Gillingham which ended 0-0 but I've long since lost the programme and neither of us can remember the exact year.
He thinks it was 1988 but I'm sure it was earlier than that.

Anyone help?

We were staying in Abergavenny and on the Saturday went to Abergavenny Thursdays v someone or other and I'm pretty sure Alan Curtis was involved playing for the opposition. Might narrow the year down?
