Good Friday 12th April 1963
Division III
Wrexham 3 Crystal Palace 4 (Dowsett 2, Allen, Werge)
Gate: 10,820
And so Easter 1963 arrived with snow still on the ground (in SE25 at least) having first fallen on Boxing Day. Wrexham had 10 matches to go after today, and Palace 11. The Glaziers had just started a hot streak which lifted them from second bottom to 11th and included a double over their hosts today, 4-3 here and 5-0 in the return at Selhurst on the coming Easter Monday. Scorer of a pair here was Gilbert "Dickie" Dowsett, signed from Bournemouth in Nov 62 and before that at Spurs, Southend and Southampton, hit 79 goals for Boscombe and 22 in all for Palace before the descent to Southern League Weymouth in 1965 (Terras were league champions in 64/5 & 65/6 and I imagine Dickie played a decent part there). A "fox in the box" type player.

Wednesday 13th April 1977
FA Youth Cup semi final, 2nd leg
Tottenham Hotspur 0 Crystal Palace 6 (Walsh 2, Hilaire 2, Leahy 2)
Gate: ?
I can remember seeing the first leg of this game, watching Palace take a 2-0 lead and then thinking it probably wasn't enough. The shock-wave that filtered through a week later can still be felt. Little Palace (of Div 3) had beaten mighty Spurs 8-0 on aggregate. One look at the 2 line-ups shows Spurs were littered with future stars - as indeed were Palace, who won the Cup this year and next, but never since.
Steve Brennan, skipper, with cup in front, sadly passed away in 2015, aged 57. I argued with the club that they should at least mention him in the programme at the time of his passing, they declined as he only made 4 first team appearances. That summed them right up then, and sadly nothing has changed since.
RIP Steve |

A trio of old non-league issues
13th April, 1936
Altamira v Euston Institute in the Final of the Wembley Hospital Charity Cup.
Just a shame the original attendee decided to scribble the details on the cover and not in the centre pages.
On the same day in 1936, the tournament programme for Wareham Rangers' grand 6-a-side tournament. With a load of teams entering and a 21-strong committee, spare a thought for Mrs.Burgess and her team who were supplying all the refreshments.
The post-tournament dance went on till 2am so it must have been an exhausting day for one and all.
13th April, 1946
Workington v Consett in the North-Eastern League.

Saturday 14th April 1945
Football League South
Clapton Orient 1 Crystal Palace 1 (Stevens)
Gate: c 2500
As another war-time season drifted to an end, Orient (then the Clapton version) hosted Palace and the game ended even, with the Palace goal being scored by Croydon-born winger Les Stevens, then a Spurs player aged 25, who eventually joined his home town club in 1950 for a season after a short period at Bradford PA. He didn't stay long at Palace, moving to Tonbridge Angels in 1951. Below is a Mickey Durling caricature of Les.

Scottish League
Second Division
Stirling Albion v Forfar Athletic
Not my favourite era for Albion programmes but this must have been some game with Forfar emerging 4-3 winners |

14th April, 1956
It was all happening in the North-East that day
Amateur Cup Final replay (after a 1-1 draw at Wembley)
Bishop Auckland 4 Corinthian-Casuals 1
The second of what would be three consecutive triumphant Amateur Cup campaigns for the Bishops.
Ticket for the posh seats (well, it wouldn't do for them to actually pay, would it)
Meanwhile, over at Feethams.....
Darlington 1 (Upton og) Derby County 0
att: 4,291
This defeat allowed Grimsby to move 2 points clear at the top of the table, a position they held to the season's end.
The subsequent Derby home programme criticises the increased prevalence of "passing back to the goalkeeper (which is what led to Darlington's goal) as inviting disaster".
Given the bland nature of the editorial in Derby issues of the time, this must rank as criticism indeed.

Wednesday 15th April 1964
Division III
Colchester United 1 Crystal Palace 1 (Imlach pen)
Gate: 5,633
Original game on 21st March abandoned due to a waterlogged pitch at 1-1 on 57 minutes, gate 5,333, game replayed today with same score - programme a full re-issue. Palace were handily placed and tonight's result saw them move back to the top, a point clear of Coventry. But just two points from the last 6 scuppered the title so Palace had to be content with the runners-up spot to secure their place in Div 2 for the first time since 1925. |

(Good) Friday 16th April 1965
Division II
Manchester City 0 Crystal Palace 2 (Smith 2)
Gate: 15,885
Did anybody go here, or write to them?
The first-ever league meeting between these 2 sides ended in a great away win for Palace, in their first season at this level for 40 years. Amazing to think that in 3 years City would be 1st division champions with a side that bore almost no comparison to the one listed - an incredible rebuilding job was done by Joe Mercer and Malcolm Allison.
Palace too would be in Div 1 by the end of the decade, though manager Bert Head wasn't appointed till near the end of 65/6 season. Only one of the Palace team shown lasted till the promotion season (John Jackson - though David Payne actually wore the #4 shirt in this game). |
