Saturday 8th April 1961
Division IV
Workington 1 Crystal Palace 0
Gate: 3,776
A surprise defeat for Palace sandwiched by a run of 6 straight victories as they headed for the runners-up spot behind goal-happy Posh. Fingers pointed at the absent Johnny Byrne, on National Service duty playing for the Army instead of at Borough Park. The Reds finished in 8th place so had a decent season themselves, but this was Palace's last-ever visit to Workington. |

8th April, 1947
Wolves 7 Derby County 2 (Carter 2)
att: 41,029
Being the pre-substitute days, Derby had not just one but two injured players hobbling about on the wing for much of this match. Seems like the home side took full advantage!
8th April, 1970
Hull City v Derby County
Testimonial match for Jimmy Lodge who had played for Huill between 1920 and 1924 as well as working for them later in life as trainer and "specialist masseur". He was born in 1895, died in 1971.
i have no details of how this match finished so if there are any Hull historians here who do know, let me know please.
8th April, 1978
Cheshire County League
Middlewich Athletic v Hyde United
Mid-table fixture. The home club merged with Miiddlewich Town in 1998, took on their name and currently play in the Cheshire League Premier Division.

Sunday 8th April 1990
FA Cup Semi Final (at Villa Park)
Crystal Palace 4 (Bright, O'Reilly, Gray, Pardew), Liverpool 3
Gate: 38,389
A win for the underdogs. Such a shame Oldham couldn't do the same thing an hour or two later.

From the sublime to the ridiculous....
Monday 9th April 1951
Division III South
Port Vale 5 Crystal Palace 1 (Thomas) - Match abandoned due to mud after 60 minutes
Gate: c6,000
This game and the programme was originally scheduled for Good Friday 23rd March, but that was postponed due to wet weather, and rescheduled for today with the original programme being re-issued. The amended Palace team (and presumably the Vale side) shown below was the one on duty for today, 9th April.
Finally the game was played and completed on Thursday 26th April, with a single-page team-sheet being issued (hen's teeth!), and honours were shared at 2-2. Which meant that Palace got a point, one of only 6 gained in their last 12 matches and the wooden spoon duly headed to Selhurst Park for the second time in 3 seasons. Vale ended up in 12th - the point they lost due to the abandonment counted for nothing though I guess their 5 expunged goalscorers were pretty miffed! |

(Easter) Monday 10th April 1944
Football League South
Brentford 2 Crystal Palace 0
Gate: c 7,500
Game originally pencilled in for 15th January but postponed. Palace finished 5th with 37 points from 30 games, and Bees were 2 places behind with 35 pts. The division was won by Spurs with 46 while Clapton Orient propped the 18-team league up having lost 23 of their 30 games (4 short of the full amount). It can't have been easy sorting this all out in those war-strewn days with players all over the World, never sure when (or if) they were coming home, the last thing on their minds being a game of football. The threat of air raids would have put people off standing in a football stadium for 2 hours, but good old British resolve and stiff upper lip came through and so 7500 people went to Griffin Park to watch the usual mix of a few familiar faces and loanees kicking leather about.

Easter Monday, 10 April, 1944
Football League (South)
QPR 1 - Portsmouth 1
Gate: unknown
Dave Mangnall scored the lone goal for QPR.
During the War, the Football League (South) comp included teams from all the Divisions. This QPR team was to be the foundation of a strong combination that would eventually promote from Division 3 a few seasons later. At the time of this game, QPR had been on an 18 game streak without loss, to continue that to the end of the season to make a final total of 22. They lost the first round game the following season to Crystal Palace. The 22, I believe, still stands today.
Dave Mangnall was a stalwart of this side and those to come, having signed at the commencement of the 1939-40 season from Millwall. Mangnall eventually played 138 games until his retirement and netted and incredible 97 goals over those games. |

10th April, 1976
Manchester City 4 Derby County 3 (Rioch 2, Todd)
att: 42,061
Funny, isn't it, how programmes can jog the old memory so excuse the waffling.....
Nothing rare or unusual about this programme but it does bring back memories. My best mate at school at the time was as rabid a Man City fan as I was Derby so I spent that Saturday afternoon round at his house listening to the score updates on Radio Two.
As his parents were out, he'd purloined half a dozen cans of beer from somewhere and so we sat there feeling very grown-up hurling insults at one another as each goal went in. And the beer took hold. Two minutes after the final whistle, in walked his parents and we both got the expected lecture on "the evils of alcohol".
Haven't seen him in 35 years. We fell out - ironically due to him driving a member of my family home when he was evidently well over the limit.....

Saturday 11th April 1953
Division III South
Norwich City 5 Crystal Palace 1 (Simpson)
Gate: 16,270
And a local press cutting somebody had kindly left inside the programme, a nice little bonus on opening
The second 5-1 win in a week for City who were doing their best to catch up the league leaders Bristol Rovers - they didn't quite make it, ending up 4th but only 4 points behind them. As for Palace, after this stuffing they ended quite well, winning 3 and drawing 2 in their final 6 games - and moving up the table to finish 13th which was as good as it got in the early 50's for the Glaziers. Scorer here was centre forward Bill Simpson, who nabbed 11 goals in 18 games in this season. A Glaswegian signed from Aston Villa in 1952 where he didn't play a game, he stayed at Palace till 1955 but made only another 20 starts in that time with 2 more goals, never establishing himself before moving to Hereford and then emigrating to South Africa.

11th April 1987
Scottish League
Second Division
Stranraer v Stirling Albion
It was a season that would see Albion lose long term manager Alex Smith to St. Mirren and the hallowed Annfield turf to a synthetic surface (first in Scotland).
This particular long trip to Stranraer ended in a 3-0 victory. |

11th April, 1931
Chelsea 1 Derby County 1 (Barclay)
att: 28,244
11th April, 1973
European Cup semi-final
Juventus 3 Derby County 1 (Hector)
att: 72,000
There were three publications of differing origin for this game. Whether any could be described as an "offical programme" is a moot point. The two here show the issue printed in London and the 'official' Juve magazine covering the match. There is a third issue (the 'black cat' issue) but it goes for silly money and I'm quite content just to have these two.
