Eire played Brazil for the first time on the 5th May 1974. It was an away game. Does anyone know if a programme was produced for this game? Did Brazil produce home programmes during this era? Can’t even find any photos or footage of the match. There’s plenty of the Shamrock Rovers( United lreland team) v Brazil in Dublin 1973, but nothing on the official first game in 1974. Johnny Giles was the player/ manager of Eire at the time. Thanks for any help.

No programme known for the game. There is a ticket which seems to be fairly common for some reason.

Brazil did issue for their independence cup in 1972 which included the Republic of Ireland. We didn't play Brazil in it though. This is a very rare programme which I've seen sell for four figures albeit because Scotland were also involved.

Thanks Gary, didn’t think there was a programme for the game. I’ve just picked up something relating to the 1974 match for not much of an outlay. Will show on here once it arrives. Not really a collector, but if l see something that looks interesting and not too expensive l try and get it. The Shamrock Rovers( All lreland team) v Brazil 1973 game makes fascinating reading. . Some are of the opinion that The Doog was punished for helping to organise it. He was getting on a bit anyway, but he was never selected for Northern lreland again.ln my opinion, a fine player and a good bloke.

Great write up of the 1974 game here, no match pix unfortunately:

Gary, the 1972 Brazil tournament programme is definitely rare, but only started to take off towards 4 figures when some Russian collectors started entering the buying fray, as the USSR took part in the event.

Overlap, thank you so much for that info. Just read it, 120,000 attendance! They would have sold quite a few programmes if they had bothered getting some printed. As you said, no photos though. For such a momentous occasion , the Irish FA must have had a photographer organised. From memory, that Terry Mancini , who scored the Eire goal in the 2-1 defeat, was a right character.

I suppose your best hope for match pix might be to try and somehow find a copy of O Globo sports magazine from immediately after the game.

There doesn't seem to be anything on any of the usual UK photo agency sites that I can see.
