Ebay "Make Offer" Dilemma

There is an item on eBay listed BIN at over £200 and has been on there several months without a nibble.

I know that the item was bought at auction for around £65 once you add in commission and postage, and I also know that £65 is probably around what the item is worth (the estimate was £40-£60). I would have had it myself but was out the country and forgot to register a commission bid (I bid at auction very rarely).

Clearly the seller is trying to catch someone who doesn’t know the value, but it is highly unlikely he will a) find a buyer and b) a buyer at that price. It’s a fairly niche item.

There is a “Make Offer” option, do I go in with an offer of say £70 with the risk of the seller getting a tad upset at me despite coming out with a fiver profit and shifting it on (I have bought from them in the past, but not for a long time, so I don’t want blocked), or do I just simply ignore and move on in the hope that some months down the line he realises it won’t shift and drops the price significantly?

What are people’s opinions?

If the buyer considers that a REALLY low offer, then it will probably be blocked by the auto-decline offers lower than function.

If they haven't used this, then they may well accept an offer just to get rid of it

I once bid £100 for a programme that was a buy it now at £150 and the seller was also accepting offers. My bid was accepted. It was Christmas. I think that's the best time of year to get a good deal

Hi guys,

place your best-offer as you see fit.

It may be auto-declined as mentioned here.

But the seller does have the option of making you a counter-offer, which you could accept or counter again and so on and so on.

I think you get three goes at making a best-offer.

It does get quite fun as your 2nd and 3rd best-offer goes up and the seller's subsequent counter-offers get decreased

You usually end up somewhere in the middle that is acceptable to both parties.

Yes I've been through that several times, but not with such a large disparity between initial asking price and the price I'm willing to pay.

As has been said above, you get 3 goes at making offers

or do what I have done in the past if you have different active ebay accounts and over a period of time offer consistently low offers

Eventually the seller will lower their expectations

You have to take into account ebay and paypal fees, if you did offer £70 then he will be down on what he paid out so you need to go higher at £80 for him to make about £4 or £5

Unless it is a private account and listed on a £1 FVF promotion.
