Hi All

I have this photo and there's a mystery about it. This is what I know:-

1. Photo dated 25th Jan 1965.

2. Stan was knighted on 1st Jan 1965.

3. He only played one league game in that season, v Fulham, on 6th Feb.

4. He played reserve games through the season.

So, putting it all together, I reckon this photo was taken in January, after he'd been knighted (hence the photographers being there), probably at a reserve game at Stoke.

So my questions are:-

1. Who did Stoke Reserves play in January 1965?
2. Who's the other Stoke player he's chatting to?
3. Who's the player in white behind them?

Thanks as always.

Sherlock

Not much help, but Stoke had a reserve match away to West Brom on the 16th Jan 1965.

Thanks - for some reason, that bloke in all white looks like a young Gordon Taylor? Bolton reserves maybe? He was 21 in 1965, made Bolton debut in 62. Doesn't look like their kit though and they wouldn't have had to ditch their black shorts for this game.

My first thought on the player was David Sadler.
Man Utd's away kit at that time would match this kit as well.
Over to the United experts? Sherlock

Leslies excellent Flickr site has some images from the 64/5 Central League campaign that may help to identify the Man Utd player.

Good work Rocky, thank you. I reckon it's Man Utd reserves - I'll check with Leslie.

This is the team sheet from that game, but it is not Sadler though he played.

I think it was number 4 McBride

Looks like we may well have to negotiate Pete!

Talking about 1964-5 in the Central League I am still looking for 4 aways that season at Barnsley, Bolton, Burnley and Sheffield Wednesday and if anyone has a copy to sell then I would offer a great price and if not for sale I would love a scanned copy.

As I have just mentioned I am still on the hunt for lots of reserves & youths from the 1960-70-80's and will pay very high prices for anything I need.

Whilst I am I would like to mention that I have uploaded a lot of Pre-War United homes and aways which cover also Everton, Liverpool, Bolton Wanderers, Sheffield Wednesday, Aston Villa, Bury, Derby County, Preston North End, Leeds United, Birmingham City, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Fulham, Arsenal, Plymouth Argyle, Brentford, Portsmouth, Accrington Stanley, Manchester City, Stoke City, West Bromwich Albion, just follow this link www.flickr.com/photos/manchesterunitedman1/

If you look at the pitch it seems to be a bit of a mud bath.
However if you look at the players, remarkably hardly any mud on their kit.

Those were the days when footballers were real men.

Like many on here I remember seeing matches played on mud baths; they just got on with it with no whinging.

Can you see a Premier League player going near a pitch like that? They might get a fleck of mud on their nice new haircut!!

With the players of today, more likely afraid that the mud will cover their tattoo's!!!!

Just returned from a weekend away in Hereford and spotted the photo. It was shortly before Stan played his last league game against Fulham. I believe this was his only league appearance in his last season before his testimonial and he played at times for the reserves. It looks to me as though this is almost certainly Gerry Bridgewood, who played as an outside right at the time.

Sadly Gerry Bridgewood passed away a few years ago. He was landlord of our local in the Village and he was always keen to chat about football. He was Stanley Matthews understudy and so he did not get as many matches for Stoke as he should have.
