Does anyone have any tips on companies who will insure your collection? Without checking the home contents insurance i cant imagine its going to cover the collection in full so im considering sorting out individual insurance on the collection.

Thanks

I asked a similar question about insuring my collection a few weeks ago. No replies though Sad
My collection is named separately in my household contents policy. I obtained a valuation from a dealer a few years ago, and this was accepted by insurers. It's a bit out of date, so it probably needs updating.

Good question. I found a good site about a year ago now i can't find it. Typical. All i can find is this site http://www.connoisseurpolicies.com/index.asp which looks ok. I guess most house policies will cover programmes. I must take some photos and start keeping receipts. I really should think about insurance. I mean no one in their right mind would leave £1000s lying around the house.

I've thought about doing this in the past, and assumed I would need a valuation done on my collection. Does anyone on here have recommendations foranybody who does valuations on programmes that would be accepted by insurance companies, or do they accept your own valuation ?

Connoisseur looks very promising and depending on your collection Wulfrunian i think you only need valuations on any individual programme you put down with a higher value than £500?

Conniseur does indeed look interesting, and it does look as though personal valuations would be ok, just buy enough units of £5000 to cover the collection. This looks like something I will need to look into, as i hate to even start to think how i would replace my collection if the worst did happen.

Just went through to the buy online section. Programmes would come under "Collectibles" i would assume and they are £30 a year to insure per £5000s worth.

You can get up to £10,000s worth of cover without the need for a house alarm.

Barrett works in insurance (He really is that boring! Laughing ) and im hoping he will offer some advice too when he sees this Smile

I'm afraid not Craig, I used to work in home insurance but not any more. I know alot of home insurance companies dont insure sporting memorabilia under 'collections'. The main collections they insure and coin and stamp collections.

That Conniseur looks the best bet so far!

You could always hope that thieves are thick and don't realise your collection is worth a lot of money. I know an old lady who has been burgled three times over the years and they have not touched her signed book collection worth a fortune. They once took a toaster and left a Tolkien signed Hobbit first edition worth about £25000.

Did anyone take out a policy with Connoisseur? I emailed them and was told to select the 'textiles, treen, books and comics' policy which is £25 per unit of £5000.

In terms of self valuation, I estimated the number of programmes (around 2800 Derby homes and aways, mostly post 1960) and assumed a cost of £1 each to replace. Then taking into account several more valuable/older programmes costing more to replace I'd say a 1 year policy covering up to £5000 should be fine for now.

I'm not sure how does insuring the collection works in this case. It could be quite tricky. What if you sell one or two programmes from the collection?
I guess that's the biggest problem here, cos most of us are always buying, selling, swaping or upgrading at least some of the programmes from the collection. In that case, if someone steals your collection, the insurance company could always say that was not the collection they insured and refuse to pay!?

I see your point, I should be doing what was suggested earlier in the thread - taking photos, keeping receipts etc. The problem for me is that my collection is stored at my parents' house because I'm renting. I look forward to the day when I own a home and can finally get the programmes out of shoeboxes and display them properly!

Think theres no alternative to trying to keep the record of your collection updated regularly, and keeping your insurer updated as a result.
Apart from theft issue theres also of course the fire risk..!!
Trying to insure through your contents policy as a named "valuable"might not give enough cover if youve got an extensive collection. Some companies have maximum values they wont go above.

Another interesting site. Says from £2 per week , so you would have to have pretty good collection to make it worthwhile http://www.collectandprotect.com/ did anyone ever try? http://www.connoisseurpolicies.com/index.asp it's easy to buy on line and only £30 for £5000 worth .. they don't seem to much bothered on details of collection. Not too sure about it.
