Just been reading about the Christmas Day fixture Clapton Orient v Bournemouth 1931.The Orient manager provided a pre - match barrel of beer in the dressing room for his lads. They staggered out to play totally pissed. Orient striker, Ted Crawford, said he collapsed on the pitch rotten drunk.Crawford said the whole team were off their heads. The result of the match was Clapton Orient 1 Bournemouth 2. ( thanks to Four Four Two mag for the article).Just wondering if any other British teams have admitted to turning out to play drunk? I know sometimes teams play like they have been on the ale all day! I remember lan Rush saying that once the title was won at Liverpool in 1970's and 80s, they would have a few beers before the end of season games. The last Christmas Day fixture in England was Blackpool 4 v Blackburn 2 1965.Attendance 21,000. Did any forum members attend this historic game? Apparently the custom at Christmas was to take orange or tangerine peel to throw at the players when they ran onto the pitch. .With rationing still in place after the war, oranges and tangerines were still luxury items. ln Scotland the last Christmas Day fixtures are down as Clydebank2 v St Mirren 2 and Alloa 2 v Cowdenbeath 1 1976.

An old Celtic pal of mine told me that celebrating 8 in a row most of the Celtic team were the worst for drink.

Gazza had a whisky or two before the 1996 League cup final, wasn't drunk though, fighting with his own players on the pitch but scored twice in the 4-2 win.

Not exactly a drinking session,,but l recall Bobby Charlton saying that he would often have a raw egg mixed with sherry to sooth pre - match nerves. That used to be given to kids who were ill in the olden days! Sometimes the sherry was replaced with a drop of hot milk. There is also tales of players nursing slight injuries not thinking they were going to be called on to play.At the last minute they would have to be dragged out of the nearby pub when a player turned up with a worse injury than them.

Slightly tangential, back in the '70s when I was playing regular on a Sunday,
mother, who was a nurse, used to bring home hypodermic needles and these
were routinely filled with vodka before being injected into the half-time
oranges on a Saturday.

Come the next morning they had marinated nicely and although not enough
to get one pissed, it gave one a comforting glow during the break.

Can recall going to Guernsey with Romford in 1975 for an end-of-season
friendly and the night before the game, me and a mate went out on the
town with all the players who proceeded to get totally shit-faced.

Most, if not all, were double hanging next day but somehow actually won
the game 1-0.

I think the sherry & eggs combo was a footy staple back in the Forties & Fifties mate.

Here's a couple of pics of the County players having sherry & eggs before FAC ties with Norwich in 1950/51 and Spurs 1959/60 ...

Thumbs Up

When we won the Third Division (South) title in 1938/39, we lost 8-0 at Swindon on Christmas Day!

Then the following day we beat them 6-4 at home.

I wonder if any other champions have had a walloping like that?

Not quite at Christmas, but how can I resist mentioning Newcastle United 1-9 Sunderland in December 1908. Still the biggest away win in the English top flight. Newcastle finished the season as Champions, with Sunderland 3rd. [/b]

Haha, I'm still steaming over that pen buddy.

Mind you, I was raging before it even kicked off when I saw the team Jurgen had picked. Milner & Hendo in the middle (shakes head), that's a crab convention mate.

What was he thinking?
