Hi all

This photo was on Ebay for months at a silly price, marked Sheff Weds on back with no other details. I finally saw the price come down, made an offer and snapped it up as it's a nice photo but nobody seems to love it as it's not been advertised or researched properly.

So I need some help please. I don't think it's Wednesday in stripes for a start as they had a white stripe on shorts from 1949-55 which is the sort of period I reckon it's from. And the thinking is it's not Hillsboro either.

Could it be Sunderland in red & white? That's looks a better fit but it's not Roker.

And who are the team in blue & white or red & white kit? Do any of the players look familiar to anyone? What about that stand behind the goal? It's a huge terrace.

All help appreciated as always.

Thank you in anticipation.

May I suggest Everton v Sunderland in 1957-8?

That looks suspiciously like a young Derek Temple on the left
and possibly the Gladwys Street end behind him?

I thought it looked like the old, barrel-roofed Anfield Road end - the kit would fit LFC of that era too.

Hi wiggy, what the hell has happened to Everton? The photo,, looks like Sheff Wed legend Derek Dooley.Did Dooley play as a number 10? Opposition could well be Liverpool? Looks like on the left could be either Roy Saunders (Dean's dad) possibly Bob Paisley if he was still playing .lf you check a Liverpool team photo from that mid 1950s era .Others that spring to mind,,Johnny Wheeler,,Fred Molineux.Could well be one of them.Good luck.

I know mate, Koeman's a dead man walking now isn't he?

What chance the return of the Moyesiah then Pie??

Re Pete's lovely photo, here is another pic of that old Anny Rd end with the barrelled roof ... certainly looks the same end to me ...

What do we reckon?

The Blues are in a right mess Wiggy. The photo does look like Anfield. The more l look at it , the player heading the ball seems to be Paisley.I notice a bandage on his knee as well.Didn't Bob have a lot of injuries near the end of his career?

He did mate.
I'm next to hopeless with player's faces though sadly, it's grounds that I'm normally ok with.

Thanks for all the chat guys. All very interesting stuff, specially as in all the months it was on EBay I was thinking it looks like Everton or Liverpool in the plain kit.

All I would say to the various points above is:-

1. It's not the Gladwys stand at Goodison - here it is on the right:-

Everton was the only ground to have 2-tier stands on all 4 sides. That info and pic thanks to "Engineering Archie", a superb reference book.

2. While I thought it was Liverpool (and the Anfield Road end certainly looks like the stand in the photo) I don't think it's Bob Paisley. He played his last game in 1954 and according to HFK Liverpool had plain red shirts till 1955, and white collars and a big badge thereafter.

http://www.historicalkits.co.uk/Liverpool/Liverpool.htm

I'm now going to ask my Everton & Liverpool customers if they can help.

May not be a good time for the Evertonian though, the curse of the Dutch manager strikes again. My team are still recovering from 60-odd days of ours.

Liverpool collector confirms

Liverpool v Sheff Weds Oct 1953

Bob Paisley & Roy Saunders. Thus Jackie Sewell is No 10.

Well done chaps!

And - he's bought it.

Cheers all

That's the best thing that's happened to him today Pete!

Where's my gold star for recognising the Anny then?

Very Happy Laughing

Next question, who pinched those white stripes on the shorts Pete Smile

I still don't think it's Weds but the Pool fan has narrowed it down to only a few games played by both Saunders & Paisley together.

Question really is - if it's not Wednesday, who is it?

Yep, and I don't think the socks match for the 53/4 season either according to the HFK site. Maybe Sunderland, but not the 53/4 season?

It's got to be between Jan 53 (Saunders' first game) and March 54 (Paisley's last). Sunderland wouldn't have been able to play at Liverpool in red & white stripes. So they must be blue.

Sherlock

Sobered up yet, Rocky?
