Luckily we have Almondvale Programmes in Edinburgh near E*ster Road these days, A great place to go and visit if you're ever in Edinburgh.

I think clubs should do more to encourage collecting by allowing a programme stall in the ground somewhere, inside away from the weather, get the kids interested.

I have a stall every Thursday at Newcastle -under- Lyme market, next to the Nat West bank. I sell a good variety of football programmes and will always endeavour to bring your club, if you contact me, if I have any.The interest from casual shoppers is almost non-existent , but I have regular buyers who always enjoy a chat. Like Tynie and myself , I bet a fair few took up the hobby after a visit to the local programme shop in the 70s/80s. Importantly , you got to meet like minded people who often helped in getting the more obscure programmes and gave useful advice. With the disappearance of such shops the internet has replaced them , and forums like this one have become the meeting place for friendly people involved in the hobby to pass on useful and helpful information ................ well ok , sometimes.

Loved going to visit the programme stall at Tynie.

The Hearts programme is season 1982/83 was 35p (I was 12 and it was the last season before the season just gone that we were outside the Premier League), I'd buy one or two of the aways played since the last home game for 25/30p each, and anything left over from my Bank of Scotland £1.00 note I'd rummage through the 5p and 10p boxes for a few old Hearts home/aways.

I then progressed onto getting catalogues and making the trip into Alan Cunninghams shop (who also ran the stall) in Edinburgh at the time, and the rest is history.

eBay makes it all so much easier these days, but I still get a buzz heading into Brian's shop mentioned earlier to see what he has.

Bring back programme stalls/huts at league football grounds and let the kids rummage through a 10p box!

For anyone interested, the details of the next West London Fair are as follows:
Venue: St. Stephens Church Hall, Emperors Gate, Kensington, SW7 4HJ.
Date: Sunday July 5 (10.30am - 1.30pm)
Directions:
By tube: Gloucester Road (District & Piccadilly lines) then a 3 min. walk. From the station turn left and cross the main road (Cromwell Road) then take the first left (Southwell Gardens) that leads into Emperors Gate. The church hall is about 200 yards along.
By car: Just off the A 4 (Cromwell Road) and turn left into Emperors Gate. No parking restrictions in this area on Sundays.
Admission is FREE and a range of hot and cold refreshments are available, thanks to Alison Lane, at very affordable prices.
Organisers Barry Dixey and Mark Barnes deserve great credit for creating a really friendly atmosphere where supporters from all the London clubs forget their normal rivalries and also welcome fans of other clubs from all over the country, even as far-flung as Sunderland!
It's an ideal opportunity to buy and sell, as well as browse and chat, in a pleasant comfortable environment,
Such well-known dealers as Ian Hands and John Dee are regularly there and usually there are about 10 to 12 stalls.
If you cannot make it on July 5, future events later in the year will be held at this venue on Sundays October 5 and December 6.

an interesting read this thread. Its clear from the collectors that have posted there is still a desire for these shops to exist but unfortunately not prepared to pay the prices charged in order for them to be viable to the person(s) running them. The way I see it is that anybody brave enough to run a shop deserves the support of the 'programme/memorabilia collecting community' and paying a few quid more for a programme isn't the end of the world for the collector but helps keep the shop afloat. Its the same as shopping in the local independent shop versus shopping in the big national/multi national chains.

No doubt there are those out there who love eBay and the driving down of prices, but if collectors don't support shops/fairs then one day they will turn around and find that eBay is the only place left for buying, and that would be a very sad day.

What the solution is, I'm not sure but I'd hate to think that the ever growing drift towards online will continue unchecked.

As I said the old Phil Curtis shop in Roker was very reasonable and the only competitors were dealers with their monthly catalogues. . The guy just loved the hobby, had a shop and probably rent was cheap in those days. I can't see how anyone can compete in the internet age. Like shopping in general, people will take a look then search on line for something cheaper. The only way I see people dealing today is like the stalls outside The Arsenal on match days, building up a regular loyal clientele over the years . The internet is here and you just get on with it no matter how great the old days were. 99p for a 1954 programme is the new reality and that's they way it is. No one is going back to paying £10 for the same item just to keep a shop going....

The trouble is that in some cases prices are ridiculous not just a couple of quid. I looked at the Sunderland shop list and they are charging £25 for Arsenal vs Sunderland 1953/54. Well to quote another of our posters the last traded price for this is max £5 umpteen times on eBay. Why would anyone pay 5 times the price "just to keep the shop going" . Collectors are not charities and my boss doesn't pay me 5 times my salary just to keep me in a job or to help me keep programme shops open. Sellers need to offer reasonable value. The internet and eBay are here to stay so they have to accept it.
