About Me

What do you do for a living?

Printer

Which club do you support and why?

Arsenal is my team, but I no longer support them (as in I don’t give them my money anymore). I was born 1 mile from Highbury, but all my family are scummers (Spurs).

What do you collect?

I collect Fairs/Uefa Cup, CWC & European Cup finals.

How did you get into programme collecting?

At my first game I bought a programme, collecting ever since, on and off.

Your Collection

What was your first football programme?

Arsenal Reserves v Northampton Reserves(my first game)

What was the last programme you bought?

The last significant one was Ferencvaros v Leeds, a mint condition programme, at a snip for £500.

How big is your collection?

Of the approx :- 191 finals, I have 180 programmes or magazines covering the games, I also have 80 tickets. I also have quite a few FA Cup Finals with tickets.

How do you store your collection?

They are in plastic sleeves and all have a piece of paper inside because the plastic can sweat, and all are in binders.

Whats the oldest programme you own?

Though it is not a programme, I have the official Real Madrid magazine for the 1956 European Cup Final. Oldest programme I have is Aston villa v Liverpool April 1947.

What is the rarest item in your collection?

The Ferencvaros v Leeds programme, because the weather on the day of the game was apparently very bad, and with the programme paper like blotting paper not many survived the journey home. All have the fold through the middle because of the size (except mine) but still get as high as £1050 at auction or as low as £680 on ebay.

Which programme from your club is the rarest and most expensive to obtain?

I would have thought the first game at Highbury v Leicester Fosse - Sat 6th Sept 1913, or the first at the Manor Ground?

What is...?

What is your worst buy?

Before I had Paypal, I got ripped of by a geezer in Holland for a Ajax v Juventus 1996 programme. When it arrived it had bits cut out it.

What is your best buy?

The Real Madrid magazine I bought for £20 off of a bloke in Spain and I saw one go on eBay for £750. I also bought a 1975 Uefa Cup Final - FC Twente v Borussia Moenchengladbach in a sealed bid auction for £200 and the only one I’ve ever seen sell, sold for £790 on eBay.

What is the most you have paid for a programme and which one?

£500 Ferencvaros v Leeds & £480 for Ujpest Dozsa v Newcastle 1969 Fairs Cup Final.

What is the most you have received for a programme and which one?

£400 for the 1933 Everton v Man City FA Cup Final.

What is your most prized programme?

Far too many to mention

Whats your biggest regret in collecting?

When I first started collecting Euro Finals I saw a Valencia v Zagreb 1963 Final and I bid a guy up to £120 and then bottled it, it sells for hundreds!!!!

The Hobby

In you opinion, is the programme collectors communtiy shrinking or growing?

I think there are a lot of people who are fed up with bad buys and final listing fees, I have noticed more people at the London fairs I go to.

What do you enjoy most about the hobby?

The anticipation of a big programme or ticket coming on the market.

Where do you buy most of your programmes from?

Unfortunately eBay, but I do buy from fairs if the price is right.

The Future

If money was no object, which programme would you most like to add to your collection?

The originals of the 1956, 57 and 58 European Cup Finals.

Would you ever sell your collection?

When I leave this country on retirement…yes.

How do you wish to develop your collection over the coming years?

Just keep picking away at the programmes I need while still keeping an eye on the tickets that might become available….imagine, every prog and every ticket……heaven!
