A team sheet seems to be aimed at the media,press/tv....or in some cases directors box/vip,where in my opinion a single sheet is public issued and may include next game details, small advert and in the old days at man united a token...

My general rule is, if its the only issue for that game it is a programme and if a single sheet is produced along with a programme for the game it is a teamsheet.

Thats how they are logged in my database anyway.

My rule: if it has a price its a programme and no price = teamsheet. (unless of course its a programme given free on entry in which case its a programme)

Indeed - there may well be both, where there is just one (sheet) that's the standard (single sheet = programme) issue - usually for reserves, youth etc. The first team fixtures usually have a programme AND a teamsheet.

Some interesting comments on this subject but just to add a nother peice of information:

I have 2 single sheet issue which clearly state "teamsheet", both with prices on, for games where full programme were issued:

1973/74 Stoke City vs Chelsea - Sunday 27th Jan 1974 20p

1973/74 Nottm Forest vs Man City - Sunday 27th Jan 1974 25p

The common denominator is the fact that the games were played on a Sunday. I think these sheets were sold to allow fans to gain entry as it was illegal to charge an entrance fee on a Sunday - or something like that?

Can anyone shed any light on this?

To Footyfans request I can confirm that in the long winter of 1973-74 teams began playing on a Sunday and could not charge an entrance fee. To get over this they issued teamsheets which had to be purchased to gain entry to the game. Programmes were also issued and these had to be paid for seperately.

Spot on mate , remember going to Evertons first ever Sunday game this era , think it was v West Brom was a realy strange expereance at the time playing Sunday but just run of the mill these days.
Think i am rite in saying the Sunday games were played because of the enagey crisis.
Do recall a prog ,but have no recolection of a T/S,unless anyone knowes different.

Everton v West Brom FAC 1974 (attendance 53,509 remained the record for a Sunday game on an English league ground until Man U expanded Old Trafford in the mid 90s) & a later FA Cup tie with Shrewsbury in 1983 both "required" a teamsheet as an entry "ticket" until the laws on Sunday trading were relaxed.

Was in the Stanley Park End that day do remember there was a great attendance , also recall the game has a very dissapointing 0-0 draw .
Thanks for your reply Dan.
